Nothing mentioned about our local newspaper, The Wigan Observer dates back from 1853 to the present day.

Doesn't look much used, to neat & tidy. Most children these days would upturned the plastic furniture etc....too much sensory, colours & designs...no wonder the little darlings can't sit still for 5 mins. Still a very different PAD Dennis.

Very nice, but many well established companies missed.

Comment by: PeterP on 25th January 2025 at 09:10

Is this at the side of the cafe has you walk up the ramp to the toilets/car park?

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 25th January 2025 at 09:13

I have never seen this, probably because I never go to Wigan these days, unless to The Linacre Centre or Boston House for medical reasons. Is the image of the dark-haired man in between Haigh Hall and The Parish Church meant to be George Orwell? He looks just like the lovely Dr. Turner from "Call The Midwife"!

Comment by: Veronica on 25th January 2025 at 09:29

There’s something missing! Where’s the children?

Comment by: Babs on 25th January 2025 at 10:06

I would imagine that there are no pictures of children is because Dennis is being a responsible adult as he knows,in the the interest of safeguarding our children,it is not allowed to photograph them without adult permission.

I thought Fractured Fred Face would have to show up. He ‘favvers’ he should be somewhere else!

Comment by: Malc on 25th January 2025 at 10:33

Many other well known Wigan Companies not shown, surely the Wigan Observer newspaper has a very long history for the Community, more than likely the oldest.
Nevertheless, good photo.

I thought the face of Wigan was a pile of dog muck at first.

Comment by: Tom on 25th January 2025 at 11:31

Why have they portrayed that black man as a shoplifter?

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 25th January 2025 at 12:07

It’s a very colourful mural undertaken by the students of Wigan & Leigh College intended as a portrayal of various aspect of local life providing a bright yet quiet place for mothers to spend a little time with there young children, not a historical record of Wigan.
I can’t understand why some of the above comments are so negative. It’s a lovely picture Dennis.
PeterP, it is on the left hand side of the steps leading up to the toilets and car park on the spot where Costa Coffee used to be.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 25th January 2025 at 12:11

PS it would be most inappropriate if not illegal to take photographs of young children at play let alone publish them!

Comment by: Veronica on 25th January 2025 at 13:37

Doesn’t look like there’s been any little toddlers around. I doubt they would have been interested in the poster either. It’s a ‘ grown up’ one from what I see. I agree Dennis is far too sensible …But what a world we live in. Tom do you know something we don’t?

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 25th January 2025 at 15:18

Apologies...I missed the whole point of Dennis's photo...I thought it was a Kiddies Corner like churches have !!

Comment by: Veronica on 25th January 2025 at 16:39

Helen you are correct it is a ‘kiddie’s corner’ judging by the furniture. I wouldn’t say the poster is for small children. As good as the art work is. A bit confusing to say the least.

Comment by: WN6 on 25th January 2025 at 17:17

It is a kiddies corner for mums and toddlers. Full of colours and interesting to both. I like it.

Comment by: Kermit on 25th January 2025 at 19:15

Phili Frog, you’re a moron. Clearly not your real name but we can guess who.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 25th January 2025 at 19:26

Looking again without concentrating the mural has all the aspects of a colourful painting by Picasso, unscrambled!
Veronica, I am sure you will appreciate this observation. I hope others are more open minded.
Dennis, although I have walked past this many times, your photo has given me time to appreciate it and its context. Cheers.

It is only perverts that have prevented decent people from taking photos of children, (normal, ordinary photos of them playing or colouring in books); it was perfectly acceptable at one time. We once attended a 1940s day at Leyburn where the local children dressed as evacuees and were led through the streets wearing name badges and carrying teddy bears, and were given pop and crisps outside the local pub. It was lovely, but we had to ask their parents if we could take photos. We once took our granddaughter on a 1940s day when she was a little girl, dressed as an evacuee, and some old ladies loved seeing her attaché case and teddy bear and they read her name badge and said "Oh, "Edie"....what's your REAL name?", and were gobsmacked when she said "Edie"!

You can see in the link all the students from the college working on the project in the arcade.
