Comment by: Vera on 13th January 2025 at 08:04

Self portrait Mick?

I see it all now! Mick has started a scrap metal business in his back garden in Shevvy Heaven. That’s why he changed his name to Big Harold, he fancies himself as Harold Steptoe!
Sooner or later one of his neighbours is bound to snitch on him to the Parish Council.
I can see the headlines now “Council House tenants up in arms about Scrap Metal Man”. They say he is lowering the tone of the district.
Mrs Belicose 44 says “The value of my home has gone down since he started bringing all this junk home, we aren’t going to stand for this, there is talk of gathering names for a petition to the Parish Council”.
“We want him to be stopped from following these Magnet Fishers around and bringing all the scrap they drag out of the canal home to our beautiful town”
Big Harold was out on his bike gathering more scrap yesterday and so unavailable to speak to our reporter.

Veronica, I was totally at a loss with the photo and its title too, but have just seen the writing UNDER the photo and it seems that the trolleys were dragged out of the canal where they had been dumped. The people who rescued them must have done so with huge magnets. DTease, that was hilarious, especially "Mrs. Belicose".....I could almost see her standing at her gate with her rollers in and her arms folded, complaining to the reporter!

loads off magnet fishing on you tube but be care full some councils may ask you to purchase a licence for a fee even though you doing them a good turn

Sounds about right that Dtease. He may have an accomplice as well…think air raid shelter..but he’s the manager with the brains.

Comment by: Tom on 13th January 2025 at 10:02

Helen, I've seen them doing this. They pull whatever metal they locate to the side, and if it's too heavy to lift by the magnet, they will use grappling hooks.to lift it.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 13th January 2025 at 10:35

Thanks Tom, I suppose they use much bigger magnets than I envisaged. In my mind I saw one of those a little horseshoe shaped magnets !!

Comment by: Julie on 13th January 2025 at 11:41

Just full of lazy people who cant take them back instead they want to make these places looking scruffy and horrible and they put them into the canal and not a thought for the waterway like robbie cumming on tv when he has got things stuck on his propellar it could damadge his and other peoples boats.

Veronica, I bet Ozy was in the background sitting in his van with the heater on full blast while Mick rides his bike up and down the canal bank scouting for scrap.

I’ll go back for t’rest later in t’wick .
Let’s just call it a service to the community eh?

Good on yer Mick .

I don't think it's a joking matter; these trolleys cost boaters £100s when they hit them with their propellers.
And they cost ASDA £ 1000 to replace them, which you and I end up paying for through price increases.

Comment by: Big Harold on 13th January 2025 at 15:49

Ticsmon, there dumped there because the thieves who have stolen them to carry their shopping can't get them over the footbridge, so they then chuck them in the cut.
There's another well-used dumping ground for these stolen trolleys at the top of the field in Worsley Hall.

Comment by: Cyril on 13th January 2025 at 15:55

They look very much to be trolleys from Tesco, so it's someone living in the vicinity of Beresford Street who over some time has done six big shops and wheeled the shopping home, then instead of returning that trolley to store they've obviously wheeled it along to the nearby canal and thrown it in, and the others too. I can't see that kids should want to wheel a trolley along main roads and that far away too, just for to dump it in the canal.

At the footpath exits of Tesco (and other supermarkets too) are magnetic strips which supposedly lockup the wheels on the trolleys so as to prevent theft, obviously they're not working as should, because three trolleys aren't yet rusty.

Aye, DTease, Big Harold and his trusty Hercules.

It’s somebody who doesn’t drive and has a glass back. No doubt the Masked Shadow
( alias Mick/ Big Harold the Roving Reporter) will get to the bottom of it. Mrs Bellicose has already set a petition in motion in league with the Parish Council….

Comment by: Cyril on 13th January 2025 at 19:30

Mick, I was under the impression that the footbridge was sloped i.e. like a ramp in order that wheelchairs could access the bridge and footpath to the stadium, shopping park and beyond.
The old wooden footbridge that was once there and nicknamed The White Bridge did have steps up or down at either end, but that was long before the area had been built on and was still a natural flood plain for the River Douglas, there were also two public footpaths leading to Scot Lane i.e. opposite Montrose Avenue and opposite Partington Street.

What a cold sky
to wench a frost
to beg a coal fire
our truth we lost
to feel that trust
with a flame we grew
to sit by
from feet to new
that growing feeling
a coal fired made
my soul still holds
for I felt it laid ..,
no snow falls
like a coal fire pass
no cast mystery
like a coal fire lasts
for when you look
in a coal fire flame
you can see yourself
or any place you name .,,
