It is nice for some one to be remembered in this way. Who ever sits a while on this bench can remember not only the postie but maybe members of their own families who sadly have passed away.

Rest in peace.

A lovely place to sit in the warmer months; I think a number of the benches are in memory of someone. I remember sitting on one outside Wigan Infirmary at 4.30 in the morning after being in A and E for 12 hours! It is still there and is in memory of a porter who seems to have been a very popular member of staff. These benches are lovely and practical memorials.

We have a bench at the end of Market St in memory of Tony Berry of the Houghton Weavers
It welcomes folk with the inscription
“ Sit Thi Deawn”…..

Could there be a trend starting? If they allow a post office red bench for one gentleman, what might come next, a cherry and white striped one for a Wigan rugby fan or a black and yellow one for a bee bus driver.

You might call this ‘The Last Delivery’ made perhaps by family, friends and colleagues.
A much better tribute than wreaths and flowers as nice and well meant as they are, that finish up in a forlorn heap in the corner of a graveyard.

There are quite a few Remembrance benches in Pennington Country park.
A very good idea.

So there should be, if requested Tom.
Lets show a little respect.

I saw on the TV a few years back that the council at Grange-Over-Sands and pleaded for no more commemorative benches on the sea front as it was ‘Over Populated’ with them.
Perhaps they could donate a few to that stretch canal between Haigh and Adlington, that would be very welcome.

We always read inscriptions on benches we might come across when walking...

The benches shadow reminds me of something.

My sister and husband have two memorial benches which brother-in-law made. One is in Birchley St Mary's graveyard at Billinge at the side of their son's grave and the other is on a path near to where they lived at Kings Moss Billinge.

I can see the elongated shape of a rocking horse.

How very sad, Peter P, that your sister and brother-in-law lost their son.....you never expect that will happen, the younger ones going first. That makes these memorial benches all the more important, especially to the families who have lost someone..
