The building is Alliance Chambers, King Street West. I’m not sure who or what it was built for, perhaps an Insurance Company.
It is only Grade ‘U’ Listed which is quite surprising for such an interesting building. Why it has been left to deteriorate has me baffled.
To the left is Clarence Yard with the side of the old Prince’s Cinema visible, another building in disrepair and to the right Clarence Chambers that currently has scaffolding up at the front on Wallgate for much needed repair work after being an eye sore for many years.

What a disgrace… are there any plans for the buildings? They are worse than ever from when I came into Wigan on the train.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th December 2024 at 08:23

Maybe Rayner has plans for it!

They'll vote em in again in May .

Comment by: DTease on 28th December 2024 at 09:52

Maybe she’s planning to put YOU in there Veronica.
Doomed forever to wander from wretched room to wretched room crying “Why ho why did I cross that Rayner woman?”

The coward has cancelled the elections in May DD.
There’s far more worthy than me DT in those vast echoing rooms..
The ones who wear Mae Wests over their Vests…after a complete renovation….
And so handy for the Railway Station.
( free travel!)

DTease, talking of ghosts doomed to wander, I have just watched "Scrooge....A Christmas Carol", with Alastair Simm, (it's been on five times over Christmas!), and that building with the rounded end reminds me of the Dickensian buildings in the film. I wouldn't be surprised in The Ghost of Christmas Past is in there! I remember going to The Princes Cinema near there when Peter and I were only in our teens and it was a dump even then! ( And talking of films, I thought of you yesterday, Veronica, when Brief Encounter was on).

From room to room and wall to wall
Veronica wanders this ghostly hall
In lonely solitude she roams
And repeats her dirge in solemn tones
“Why ho why did I so defame her, this Witchy woman by the name of Rayner?
“She cast me here by som magic spell
Doomed to wander this living hell
And all because I didn’t favour
Five long years of bloody Labour”.

What a terrifying house of horror . Imagine the doors creaking open at the dead of night and Rayner screeching ' 14 years of Tory mismanagement ' none stop to every question . ( Have a peanut) .
In another the bookkeeper holding up the red briefcase while grinning inanely like the joker from Batman .
That eerie weeping from under the stairs must be Starmmer . (He always looks like he's about to break into tears ) .
And so deathly cold in that house with no heating .

4 1/2. Long and weary years to go yet.
I watched ‘Zulu’ Irene.
It’s the same today as yesterday . Nothing changes.. Brilliant film.
I love the chanting at the end.

This building appears to be Limbo to me. I've asked around, and none of those I asked knew anything about the owner or any future plans for the building.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th December 2024 at 15:09

I don't know who Rayner is; I could google it but I imagine it's a politician so I can't be bothered! But I don't wonder who Kitty Kat is..... I know.

Hello, Poet! I’ve been wondering where you had got too. Glad to see you are still with us.
All the best for 2025.

It’s definitely a moron Irene.

Comment by: Poet on 28th December 2024 at 18:47

Thank you DTease , and the the same to you .

Irene, my son's been touring Europe (Hungary, Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria etc) playing Scrooge in Christmas Carol. Surprising how so many people know Dickens, even in Eastern Europe.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th December 2024 at 20:35

Wow, Pat McC....that's brilliant! You must be very proud and I wish him every success.

Comment by: Peter on 28th December 2024 at 20:54

Sounds like Irene doesn't have a TV or read newspapers :-)

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 28th December 2024 at 22:03

You've got it in one, Peter.....I have a telly, (where I watched Scrooge), but I never watch the news and I don't read newspapers. It's what keeps me sane!

Comment by: Poet on 28th December 2024 at 22:24

Irene , you're actually missing a trick by ignoring the politicians on telly . Try watching Prime Minister's Question Time , but with the sound turned down (very important) . It's superb comedy . The gestures and facial expressions really show them up to be the berks they absolutely are. Nearly as good as the Muppet Show.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th December 2024 at 08:37

It’s a great pity there’s no ‘Spitting Images’ anymore they would have a field day! Then again they would end up clapped in irons. Especially the Rayner woman's. She speak through many teeth with forked tongue I don’t know how she does it! She say ‘’ we have many houses in country but need another million and half!” She’s coming for all these empty buildings.
Ps PMQ very entertaining, rowdy…and theatrical…
