A lovely interior to this church, beautiful red glass incense holders and bare brick walls which somehow look quite cosy.My Mum and my maternal grandparents are buried in the grounds of this church.

A rather stark looking church sitting on its own among green pastures. Looks like the churchyard has no boundry ?
Nice clear image Dennis.

Beautiful and well cared for.

Comment by: Gary on 14th December 2024 at 08:16

Thanks Dennis.
I have many family graves in the church yard.
The building was restored a few years ago utilising donations and ecclesiastical grants. It looks in fine condition.

It's sad we have to erect protective mesh over the coloured staind glass windows. Beautiful windows coved up because of mindless vandalism.

We often pass by this church in the car along Hall Lane, coming from Hindley to Aspull, , and the graves at that side of the church which faces Hall Lane are beautifully kept and always full of flowers. There must be a lot of relatives who visit regularly. Perhaps there is also a churchyard team, as we have in Abram, who keep everything neat and tidy.

Agreed Peter. The alarm “bell box” as well. The age we live in eh?

It's got the fanciest brickwork and roof tiles in Wigan.
When I first started driving past this church I made a point of stopping and having a walk around, I have done the same thing several times since..

All the lovely open fields around there. I hope the Deputy ‘chancer’ doesn’t come after the land. It’s started on the A6 heading towards Aspull our beautiful fields being turned over extending the industrial estate. She can over- ride Councils.
Lovely village church.

Good photo of Saint Elizabeths, on the corner of Bolton Rd and Hall Lane.

The church railings are spiked.
Flat bar has been welded over the spikes close to the telephone pole on Hall Lane.

Must be reassuring for the telecom engineer to know he can't skewer himself on the church railings, if he ever has the misfortune to fall off that pole.

To give it its correct name St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church was built in 1882 and primarily funded by Roger Leigh (of Hindley Hall).
It is believed the church was named after St. Elizabeth in honour of Leigh's wife, Elizabeth Blackwell, who died two years after the church was completed. The patronage is vested in trustees.
I don't know when the words 'of Hungary' were dropped from the church's sign outside, I suppose there must be a reason?

I had my wedding there Dennis 1st April 1967 in the afternoon then after we held our reception at the Running Horses sadly it ended after 3 years if we knew about post natal depression things may have worked out but we are still in touch today especially with my girls very sad. Will be drowning my sorrows in Wetherspoons this afternoon with work colleagues hopefully no trouble like last time Wigan played Bolton with the yobs not the supporters.

Veronica, sadly there is no glass slipper to speak of and less hope the green belt will stay protected, I'm afraid the two ugly sisters were coming for the land and peoples money all along, but never said owt about it during their campaign, and the waster with two red folders knows it too.

Brace yo sel fer orribul council flats ore yon luvly fields.

We’d best all go in that lovely Church and pray very hard…although you don’t have to do that. Prayer can bring about miracles. I don’t care what ‘scoffers think’.
Sorry to hear that sad story John.

John (W) Very brave of you John to share such a personal story with us. You both must have both been very young, they say young love never runs smooth, but for yourselves quite traumatic and there was little or no clinical advice around in those days and no understanding of what you both must have been going through . The circumstances these day are very different, in those days any with form of anxiety or depression you were told just get on with it.
I am sure others would join me in saying that you sound brilliant today and trust that your ex came through okay.
Enjoy your pint this afternoon and avoid Bowtoners, it was that Tangerine Blackpool lot that caused bother last year when we were in Spoons.

Very sad John.

Some photographs obviously trigger memories. The only words of comfort I can offer when it comes to drowning sorrows, is that your story is a definate ten pinter.

Seven days later on the 8th of April 1967 a lucky Irish horse named Foinavon won the Grand National at 100 to 1, because all the other horses.. fell.

John Westhoughton Bolton 0 Wigan 2.
You need to drown your sorrows a little further. Only kidding pal.
I've no time for yobs in football, the Courts should jail them like the rioting up and down the Country during last Summer.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 14th December 2024 at 15:45

Sorry to hear that John, but glad you came through and are still in touch with your family. Veronica, you have said prayers for me twice when I have been having medical procedures and I am sure they helped.

Thanks for your kind words everyone,we had a great get together yesterday trouble free with a couple of our wives joining us in the evening, football isn’t my scene more of a boxing fan and I predict Tyson Fury to loose this coming Saturday BUT one punch can change everything so we will see.

Glad you are feeling more cheerful John. You can’t keep a good man down. The pain of divorce can be worse than bereavement nobody does it without a great deal of thought. (Except celebrities and film stars!!!)
