Grove House?

Grove House?
This beautiful Mock Tudor house looks very seasonal with a dusting of snow on the roof. It’s in a prime position on Hall Lane directly opposite the exit from Wrightington Hospital.
I think it is known as Grove House but I cannot find any references to it or its history apart from a map that shows that it might now be split into two properties with the left hand side being Grove Villa.

Does look seasonal and very familiar Colin.
I used to own one like that.
It was on the lid of jigsaw puzzle box.

Did it belong to the Calderbanks at one time.

Comment by: Roy on 8th December 2024 at 10:19

Correct Frank, a daughter of Mr Calderbank lived in the one on the left and a son in the other.

It is a shame that road has been spoiled by all those rumbling lorries heading to Burscough industrial estate.

I wonder if Mr Calderbank's ancestors lived on the bank of the Calder, perchance?

On Thursday I was having my car serviced at Acton st garage, so why I was waiting I went to the Queens hall cafe for a bite to eat, one of the choices was beans and sausage on toast so ordered that but without the beans.
A religiously looking woman said it comes with beans, I said what do you mean, she said the come out of a tin, beans and sausage, I said that ridicules
and ordered a toasted tea cake and a cup of tea.
Woman who brought my tea banged it down on the table so hard that the spoon was rattling on the saucer.
I thought sod this missis and walked out before my tea cake had come, which I had already paid for.
I then caught a bus to Ashton and found a Welsh cafe, that was busy with 5 women servers, I had sausage and bacon barm cake and a cup of tea which was excellent, cafe was named, Cwtch Cafe.

A day in the life of Big Harold.
They are volunteers giving their time freely Harold. I’ve always found them very nice people. The only thing is they only do a few hours and they close at 1 00 if I’m correct. The coffee is delicious.

'Cwtch' apparently means a cuddle or a hug Big H.
Lovely after a storm.. in a tea cup.

Comment by: T. D. on 8th December 2024 at 17:30

Yes it is a shame about that road, and the pavement is a bit rough too Big H.

Comment by: John Noakes on 8th December 2024 at 17:57

I always thought 'Cwtch' was Kiss in Welsh. As in "go cwtch a sheep, boyo".

Comment by: Big Harold on 8th December 2024 at 18:35

Yes the owner told me what Cwtch means, and yes again I sometime ride on the footpath down that stretch and I agree it is rough. I don't think the Lancashire council are bothered because they don't get many walkers. using it.
