German Sausage
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-HX99)
I think I'll stick to our trusted traditional English fish and chips.
Wigan is becoming a junk food town.
If I went to visit a German, French or Dutch Christmas market would I find them selling. British pies. Pea soup, Lancashire hotpot, and Sausage & Mash, no I don't think so.
This is the same stall in the same location as PAD on 7th December 2023 except then it was called Sweet Treats. What on earth is going on here?
Ey up!
Long time since yon Zeppelin fust dropped his wust on us Dennis.
Favours Fritz is back with another weapon of mass destruction in Wigin. The 'Bratswurst' (death sausage) High in fat and a price to trigger a coronary event.
BRITONS
Kitchener wants YOU.
Join your country's heart foundation....today.
God Save The King.
No comparison to Lincolnshire sausages …
Lovely with mash. My grandkids loved them.
Ozy your mate is being served.
I love a Bratwurst when walking around a traditional German Christmas Market in the snow but not walking around Wigan on a wet and windy day.
Don't know if they Bombed any Chippies in Wigan but they certainly did in Liverpool. One or two Tripe shops perhaps!
Old English sausages from Hiberts are my favourite.
I bet none of the food was cheap or at a realistic price ,no wonder only one customer
German food isn’t very tempting at all. I’ve been a few times to the lovely country on holiday and been disappointed. French and Italian a big YES but not Fritz’s fare no Thankyou.
Some people will be thinking it, so I will say it!
Dennis, when you took this picture was it Happy Hour with 'All You Can Eat' for a fiver.
He looks totally engrossed in devouring what he can like Homer Simson before 'Times Up' then with a few minutes to go he'll be filling that plastic bag to take home.
I am the first to admit I LOVE junk-food! My favourite "sitting on a bench" food is fish and chips, and I adore a pie or a pasty, but I LOVE an occasional burger or hot dog. I don't LIVE on them....it's just an occasional treat, and in my view a little treat now and again does no-one any harm. As the song goes, "a little of what you fancy does you good".
I'd imagine they'd now be like how our sausages are made and mass produced, though if made to the traditional recipes with herbs and spices like how some of our sausages can be; then they'll be very tasty, and in cold weather I'm sure the calories will soon be burned off.
I thought the quip by Donald on Benidorm about the German women around the pool smelling of sausage, to be quite funny.
In the email sent out by Wigan Council on the events happening this week in Wigan and Leigh, today is support local business Saturday, and apparently we are to support the small independent shops by buying products from them, I know there are still a few left in Leigh but are there any small independent shops still trading in Wigan town centre, apart from McNulty's?
All I can say despite all the bombing is - I am truly grateful the war was won by the greatest generation before us.
Do you remember old Tommy Hibbert John?
I always went there for 2 chump chops in the early seventies they cost 5 shillings then….that was when we lived in King St. it was the best butchers in Howfen…still is but a bit too far away for me now.
Becoming a junk food town?? Been one for a long time now
Richmond vegan sausage are really good,I know they’re not to everyone’s taste but I love them.
Veronica I certainly do remember Tommy Hibbert(I thought my Hibert didn’t look right) and I’m thinking his son runs the business now and one of George Martin’s drivers works there…. he’s the one that said thas turnt tin than to someone who was a bit late,Irene we enjoy a MacDonalds every blue moon but we could manage a Nando’s every week.
Maureen, I'm not vegan or vegetarian and I admit I haven't liked the vegan sausages I have sampled when offered them, but I LOVE Gregg's Vegan "Sausage" Rolls and Vegan Bakes....they're delicious.
Another day, another fad.
Irene,I haven’t tried those but I will look out for them…and Richmond vegan if you haven’t tried them are really good,
Irene,I haven’t tried those but I will look out for them…and Richmond vegan if you haven’t tried them are really good,
Town has changed a lot, for sure. That takeaway carrier is not to everybody's taste either.
It's for frau... Intit?
No Wigin mon would really o wanted tack his snap wom in yon.. pink bag!
Why.. Folk wud o thowt he wor on't tuther bus.
Some time ago I was offered the chance to try a Linda McCartney (long time ago) vegetarian sausage. Linda was the one who used to say “if it has a face don't eat it“.
Nice try by Linda. Unfortunately her sausage was tasteless and had the texture of soggy paper mache.
Vegan Sausages!, vegan sausages!, garlic bread! Vegan sausages and garlic bread? I think I’m goin’ ter bi sick!
They bombed the Chippy in Moor Road not far from Orrell Post. I was about six years old at the time and I still remember hearing the bombs whistle as they came down.
What do you foodies think is inside anything with vegan written on it.
It doesn't say but it should say, this product is made from salty muck.
Dtease, remind me to laugh later on.
Just call in Gregg's pie shop when you're next in Wigan, Maureen, (in Market Place, near Max Spielmann's). Also, Iceland Supermarket sell Gregg's Vegan Bakes , frozen, that you just heat up in the oven at home. John, (Westhoughton), we love Nando's too and sometimes take our grandchildren to the one in Leigh, near Tesco. Our Edie does all the "ordering" for us via her phone, as we haven't a clue how to order from our table using a phone or an "app" or whatever they call it! (Grandad pays, though!).
Alan P,. My relatives German wife would like us all to get over the wars. I tend to agree, but we will always remember. Thanks for sharing your story. .
Irene have you got a Nando’s card as occasionally we get a free meal with the points that you get and always place our order at the counter, can’t manage that technology ordering from those puzzles on table, occasionally we have been in Don Alberto’s next door to Nando’s Leigh,we supplied most of the concrete to most of that shopping centre and recollect doing a Harry Worth on those glass fronted buildings.
Thank you Irene,I go to town twice a week and I also go to Iceland once a week..so will definitely have to look for those.
We’ll, it made me laugh when Peter Kay said it Maureen.
Look at the prices. £7 for a sausage and you can’t even sit inside to eat it. Can’t comment on the quality but I do know that Greggs vegan sausage rolls are excellent.
John, we don't really go to Nando's enough to have a card, but thanks for the info. DTease, Peter Kay DOES make me laugh....my son used to live in London and confirms that "mushy peas" in the chippies there cost a fortune, and that's on the rare occasions they know what you're talking about! ("as't nowt moist?!"). My son's wife is from London and the first time her lovely parents, (sadly no longer with us), came to visit, they got off the train at Wigan North Western, and called in the chippy across the road from the station on Wallgate, and they couldn't believe how cheap and delicious it was compared to London chippies! Made me feel quite proud!
I quite like Gregg’s Chicken Mayo ‘ French Sticks’ but there’s more lettuce and bread than chicken. Having said that they are cheap and tasty if you’re in a hurry to catch the train.
Seven quid for a sausage ? … seven bleed’n quid ? …
You can get a wheelbarrow full of sausages at Bowt’n market for seven quid .
Only problem being , them miserable gits at Trinity st . won’t let you through the barrier with a wheelbarrow .
“ More than mi job’s worth mate “.
Yon bus drivers on the Bee network aren’t any more accommodating either .
I find folk aren’t helpful like they used to be in the old days .
Ozy thet reet mon, hopefully Dennis we will see your photo of St Elizabeth’s soon.
Speaking of chippies in London …
My experience of asking for fish and chips in the Metrolopse is this … the imbeciles fry the fish with the skin still on it … REALLY ! … and the bones still in it … if you can believe that .
Ugggh !
Why not just flog it wrapped up in the front page of The Mirror , still flappin’ around and have done ?
Bloody Neanderthals the lot of ‘em .
What MUST it be like having to live south of Watford ?
And who , apart from the Japanese , would want to eat fried fish skin ? … fried chicken skin’s bad enough …. but fish skin ? … yuk ! Even the cat won’t eat that muck .
It reminds me of a story we were read at junior school .
It involved some troll or other that sat round his Aga … constantly repeating …
“ Tee Hee … they’ll never guess my name …
… Crumpledfishskin is my name “ … chortle
chortle .
Fish, Chips and GARDEN PEAS????
Whatever will they think of next?
You wouldn't think Mr Gregg would be able to stuff all these ingredients into his sausage rolls.
Greggs' vegan sausage rolls contain the following ingredients:
Water, Fortified wheat flour, Quorn mycoprotein, Palm oil, Textured wheat protein, Rapeseed oil, Flavouring, Salt, Starch, and Palm fat.
Other ingredients include:
Pea protein, Potato protein, Breadcrumbs (wheat), Yeast extract, Wheat gluten, Dextrose, Thickener (pectins), Dehydrated onion, Pea fibre, and Rubbed sage.
DTease,I agree ..whatever Peter Kaye says or does is funny..I also watched Bradley Walsh last night in ‘The Chase’ and he was hilarious.
Now I like my fish with skin on, and when I do have it battered down south (served with normal-priced mushy peas) I can't remember ever finding any bones.
The best fried fish for me is whole fried Grouper Asian style, the skin is lovely and crispy and the flesh is pure white and melts in your mouth.
Some more foodie advice, Kentucky and Nandos chicken comes mostly from big sheds in the Polish countryside, and because it lived in a shed all of its 4 weeks life, it has no taste until it is coated in the artificial spicy sauce and bread crummy batter they put it on.
It seems my comment on Vege foods was eaten by the Gremlins....but would just like to say having been a vegetarian for more years than I care to remember...I totally agree with Big Harold's comment on vegan food, full of additives, also I dont want to eat a beetroot burger that looks like someone just slaughtered something !
I’m in full agreement with your last comment Maureen.
Yes, Helen, that's the word, Additives.
I can't understand why they never mention Vegetables in these Vegan products.
Big Harold,I’m sorry to disagree but..have you ever seen the ingredients of ordinary sausage, and also I don’t see any vegetables in the making of them.
