Photo-a-Day (Friday, 6th December, 2024)
Bolton Road, Aspull
Dennis, isn't this house perhaps the only one in Lancashire with seven gable ends ?
Pass here regularly,lovely place.x
Isn't this the house behind which a small number of new houses have recently been built, their address being "Ainscow's Meadow"? I always have a quick peep at the house whenever we pass in the car and think how lovely it is.
Advertised in 1867 under 'Farms to be let'.
Ainscough farm Aspull containing about 20 Cheshire acres, with large newly erected house and commodious farm buildings.
Good photo Dennis.
In the 50s and 60s the residence of Billy and Vera Rutter, with their three children, contemporaries of mine. First class people. Billy had no time for long-haired male pop groups and used to watch Top of the Pops with a look of total disgust.
The farm had passed to them from Vera's family, the Ogdens, who lived in the farm house further up the road.
The house interior was completely authentic, big Victorian tables and side boards - stuff which would not fit in any modern house today.
The family were Methodist, attached to the Harold Street chapel.
Was the Ainscough farm the same farm as Ainscow farm ?
Looks a very idyllic place to live. Bet they have tremendous views of Rivington.
That ladder leaning against the wall is an invitation to any passing burglars, especially at this joyous time of the year.
A particularly pretty traditional brick built farm house. I bet it looks lovely inside at Christmas.
Interesting info on the Ogden family Gary, and from results of the Haigh Show 1939.
For heifer over one year and no broad teeth. Ist place, Amos Ogden, Ainscough farm Aspull.
2nd place Richard Cliff, Chadwick farm, Abram.

Beautiful farmhouse set back from the road. Lovely. Just a question, what happened to Garry, I used to love his comments. I've Looked back for some months on Pad, he's not commented for a while. Hope he's OK.
I thinks it looks lovely at Easter too.
Beautiful place Aspull, the farmhouse would never look out of place there.
What happened to the 20 acres?
Dennis was you on the bus for this photo? I drove down Hall Lane this morning and seems like a lot off excavations going on within a few hundred yards of the mini roundabout outside of this farm building,I would like to see a photo of St Elizabeth’s Church where I first got married in 1967 as you can never see the church for the trees.
I miss Garry's comments too and have asked about him quite a few times over recent months but to no avail. Hope he's okay.
Dave, they are still there.
Veronica, they are on the wrong side of Bolton Road to have a good view of Rivington. Plus they are surrounded by trees.
Irene, yes, you're correct, but it wasn't a meadow, it was a yard, so the new development should be "Ainscow's Yard" or "Ainscough's Yard".
I believe you are right about the gable ends Wally.
Malc, I think that Garry may have got a bit fed up with some of the nit picking comments he was getting at the time.
John, I have sent in a photo of St Elizabeth’s Church that I took from the bus.
Auction at "Ainscough's farm Aspull". Fifteen acres of meadow grass, one and a half acres of potatoes and five acres of oats.
(Ormskirk Advertiser, 1867)
Dennis your exactly right about Garry, some people were nit picking with him and wouldn't let it drop.
I to miss Garry's comments. After saying that, he could argue and give it back.
Happy Christmas Garry.
Yes and that’s a Happy Christmas from me Garry so many questions I meant to ask you.
I’m sure he will pop up at Christmas to wish us all a Happy Christmas.
If not I will still include him nearer the time. He’ll be well stocked up with coal anyway…
