When I was a teenager I watched a high laden lorry get stuck under there. I helped the driver to let some air out of his tyres that let him drive out.

Just wondered how many vehicles have hit that bridge or even got stuck underneath it over the years. This will be the Wigan Wallgate to Southport line. Very similar to the bridge in Frog Lane, and look how many vehicles have hit that bridge.

Looks much like the low bridges along what is called The Pilgrim Path at Walsingham but they have all had their tops demolished to allow large farm vehicles to pass through.

If that’s Mill Lane, do you remember the severe flooding down there in 1987?

The Prescot Street Bridge is only 2.9m, and this one on Mill Lane is 3.2m, so a single-decker bus will fit under it.

Yes Colin, i lived in Miles Lane at the time. The worst flooding was in Millbank off Mill Lane, a cousin of mine lived in the last house at the 'bottom' of Millbank against the railway embankment and the water had nowhere to go, the water was up to the bedroom windows at the lowest point in Millbank and he and his family plus others had to be rescued by small boat via their bedroom windows. It was caused by a blocked culvert on Calico Brook.

There’s a railway bridge on Apperley Lane, a stones-throw from the station.

I knew a lad who lived in Millbank during the flooding, and he lost all his goldfish from the garden pond.
There's a video here of another Appley Bridge flooding that happened 8 years ago.

Irene, if you are viewing today, yesterday you thought that Dek had misspelled Appley Bridge.
He is definitely referencing Apperley Bridge north east of Bradford on the road out towards Harrogate, that’s where the pubs and the marina he mentioned are. Lovely area.

Thankyou Colin. I DID think Dek had mis-spelled Appley Bridge yesterday but didn't say anything as I felt people would say I was nit-picking. When you mentioned Apperley Bridge being near Bradford I thought YOU were correcting him too....what a mix-up! It's like a Carry-On film....aren't we daft?! I know Apperley Bridge in Yorkshire quite well as we had some friends who attended the Yorkshire 1940s events who lived near there. Apologies all round, everyone! (I need a brandy!)

This road and low bridge was part of the 333 Ribble bus route to
Wrightington Hospital. I remember it well when I drove for Ribble.

Comment by: John (westhoughton) on 29th November 2024 at 16:56

Ray did you drive for Ribble in the 60 ‘tis and if so did you attend the annual do at the Locarno Ballroom Blackpool if I spelled that right?

There’s a mobile bar hire company in Apperley Bridge that call themselves “ The Bar Stewards “ ….
There’s quite a few of those in Appley Bridge as well …
How about that for a coincidence ?

There is the most wonderful jigsaw within Wigan, that is as deep as any ocean but we born and bred not to express !

Comment by: Ray on 29th November 2024 at 18:49

I have been to The Locarno at Blackpool, but not connected with Ribble.
I drove for Ribble from early 1968 through to early 1970 .
I spent the rest of my time driving HGV Class 1 & Class 3 vehicles through
to I reached 71 years. Cheers.

Ray I knew Ken Arstall from Aspull who worked for Ribble around 1967/68 and we had a great time at the Locarno on a Ribble do.
