Rooftop Bar
Photo: Mick Byrne (.)
Looks a nice area with the canal view. Is it a converted in an old building Mick ? A mill maybe ?
is it just me un the wife on this site but we always say chimley pot lol
It's at Wigan Pier and used to be a museum, Helen, with mock-ups of a terraced house, a steam train carriage, an Edwardian Pub and a Victorian schoolroom where you sat and had a "lesson" with a Victorian teacher. Parties of schoolchildren used to be taken, often dressed in Victorian clothes. I went with Abram school a couple of times and was taken to the front of the class and given a dressing-down for having "paint" on my face and fingernails.....the teacher said I was a "Jezebel"! Sadly the museum is no longer, but it IS a nice area....let's hope the new bar is a success. I don't think it was a mill....I think it was just canal-side buildings but perhaps Mick will know. There ARE old mills in that area which have now been converted into other things.
Since when has Wiggin pier been known as “ the Wigan Pier quarter “ ?
And where precisely are the other three
“ quarters “ ?
Will afto give it a try Mick if Fausto Coppi,Bernard Hinault,Big Harold and Ozy go that will take one seat so should be a good do if he gets that slate back on his roof that his before it causes to much damage.
and there used to a bloke sat on outside petty in the museum.
Mick,I know where you meen?
Mick and Big Harold could share one chair, John, (Westhoughton), so that will give a bit more room. Ozy, when you come into Wigan on the bus, and turn into the bus station by The Grand Hotel, there is a sign on the wall at the bottom of Hallgate saying "Victorian Quarter".....it all seems a bit pretentious to me, as if Wigan is trying to emulate places like Chester or York, but that's just my opinion.
Irene. The place where the bar is being constructed was once part of the Eckersleys mill complex.
Thank you Irene it’s good to know the Bletchley girls are active, just about to watch the Gladiator…..
Thanks to Irene & Les...my Auntie Annie Foster worked at Eckersley Mill, what would she think of a rooftop bar...her family were Chapel folk & teetotal !
My cousin lives in the Maritime Quarter on the waterfront in Swansea Bay. Perhaps a connection with trade carried on via canals/waterways?
Nice photo Mick and the development down at the Mill looks interesting. I am sure it will be worth visiting when completed, especially that roof top bar if only to see the views.
There’ll only be one impression on the seat Irene if Mick ( and) Big Harold sit there. 2 cheeks that is!
Thankyou Les for that information. My Auntie worked at Eckersley's Mill but I hadn't realise that was it on the photo. Many thanks.
Will there be a bouncy water slide from the bar to the water ?

Looks good - they should have been employed to do Wigan centre rather than the Chinese, who did a bunk.
There'll be a few drunks falling from the rooftop bar too.
