Chadwick Farmhouse in the Snow
What you might call an outpost on Greater Manchester's North West Frontier.
Travel any further through the Khyber Pass into the Tribal Territories of Coppull at your peril.
No need for a Passport, a Bus Pass or Yak will suffice to get you through from Standish to Chorley!

I like the way the buildings all huddle together & are on a rise...more able to see approaching marauders !
We sometimes have a ride to Chorley Market on the bus along that road. It's a very pleasant ride but I think I'll wait until Spring! Brrrrrr!
Irene, it’s Chorley Market day today so we might be going a little later. You can never have enough Christmas Jumpers!
Think we’ll take the Bus and leave the Yak at home.
It is a nice ride to Chorley and some good shops there. Very well planned centre new and old. A lovely park as well to walk in. Last year we visited the cafe next to the old Tudor building. At one time you could go inside and it was free, now it’s only open at certain times.
I would love to get out and about on these lovely wintery crispy mornings, but I'm afraid they are a bit out of reach these days.
Colin there’s not much changed at Chadwicks Farmhouse but there has been a lot of changes down the road at what was LiL’s cafe (an Indian now) and was it the Seven Stars pub next door which is now the Olive Garden (an Italian) I frequented both establishments 60 years back have you any reports on the Italian?
John, (Westhoughton), I have never been to The Olive Garden but some people I knew from work used to go regularly and loved it. Of course the owners of restaurants can change over the years and I have no knowledge of whether they are the same people in there now, but hopefully they are. You can only give it a try.
Thanks for the info Irene will look reviews up and go from there.
John(W) / Irene, quite a few yard since we went to The Olive Grove and we used to go quite regular one time.
Perhaps we got out of the habit during Covid but if it’s still the same I could highly recommend it. Atmosphere and staff excellent especially if you have a birthday or celebration.
These days we usually go to La Mammas in Standish or Casa Bruno’s on Wigan Lane for Italian.
Lucky you Colin & Wiganers having Italian places to go to for meal. Here in the 'wilds' of Norfolk it would be a days's march to find one....they open & then close down. Nearest one we know of that has been open for years...& not a chain.... is at Peterborough !
A beautiful photograph Colin and thank you. It wouldn't have looked out of place on a 1950s Christmas card.
Helen, we're in a similar position 5 miles to the nearest shops/restaurants. Needless to say, 'deliveroo' is unheard of!! Wigan offers a wide variety of restaurants, which is really good.
Helen maybe the well-to-do Norfolkonians are not keen on fake food like some Wiganers are.
Who in their right mind reads restaurant food reviews to decide whether to pay them a visit.
Helen if we are truthful I don’t think you can beat a good home cooked meal.
Come on Harold if you saw a lot of really bad reviews for any restaurant would that not make you think twice before going.
Bang on Big H .
Who in their right mind allows themselves to be swayed by reviews on anything they see on the internet ?
It’s all a load of cobblers anyway .
I did a short stint working at well known establishment on Wigan lane not too far from the RAEI .
Looking on trip advisor , most of the comments at that time were , shall we be generous and say
less than complimentary
… to put it mildly .
The odd one or two that gave the dump 4 or 5 stars , were submitted by members of the management .
The place is boarded up now .
Quelle surprise !
Big Harold??
You are also correct Ozy, when you say any idiot can write a review.
But when it comes to food, I'm one-up on most Wiganers because we're as your dinners would be a couple of butties, I would be served four proper old-fashioned restaurant-style food, a lot of it imported from the US or Australia.
Say no more sorted thanks young lady.
John has the penny dropped Lad? Because “Not a lot of people know that”….even our Ozy hasn’t twigged.
It certainly has Vero
Veronica sorry I don’t know where the Vero came from ……
Talking about good food, years ago when the Indians took over the old Navigation pub in the village of Gathurst, a lot of Wiganworld food experts said how good it was, but I did try it and thought it was rubbish, so I told the waiter and. the cook.
I did mention it on WW and was abused by chip butty eaters; I remember one told lies by saying that the Indian and Pakistani doctors from Wigan infirmary had dinner meetings every week and that they loved it
Anyway just to let you know that the builders have moved in
Don’t mention it John. I have had quite a few nick names over the years ( complimentary) I won’t bore you with them.
