Brick Community Stadium
What will it be called next?
The is a vast facade...well I suppose it would be as it is a football stadium.
Can't understand ' Believe'.....in what ?
Sorry to but in John ....
(Re the PAD on Wednesday re Macdonalds.)
Us Ladies of a certain age will remember a subject taught in school...Domestic Science...re my comment .
Bolton's will take some beating.Toughsheet.
Helen of Troy, I've not got a clue what or who they wanted folk to 'believe' in either, but if it was Rachel Reeves many pre budget supporters may have had a 'change' of mind by now... Oh aye.
Didnt he break his leg... Cause he hasnt mentioned it for a bit
Domestic Science - Happy memories Helen. Macaroni cheese wasn't very popular in the late 1950s - mine usually finished up in the bin!
What does 'Brick' mean in this context? It's a huge building, the people walking past look like the size of ants. Thanks for today's photo John.
Helen of Troy., it is a great shame that Lady living at at no 11 Downing st didn't specialise in 'Domestic Science', instead of Financial Studies aimed at porring a big hole in my bucket.
Pat McC the Brick is a local charity around Wigan who help less fortunate people and have teamed up with the stadium for 12 months.
"Believe" was a slogan dreamt up by Wigan Council and can be used in any context
"The Brick" is a charity in Wigan for homeless people, and they do a grand job. Whether "The Brick" mentioned on the stadium is connected to that or has another meaning I don't know. Helen, we did Domestic Science at Hindley Grammar but it was just cooking and learning about food. I know some schools did lessons in washing, ironing, cleaning and generally looking after the home, but we didn't. I think it's a good idea.
'Believe' is a slogan used by a number of football teams, I remember Fulham and Middlesbrough using it before Latics adopted it on their way to winning the FA Cup. The council then adopted it as a slogan 'Believe in Wigan'.
I don’t know who makes up the ‘believe’ slogan in Wigan as I don’t think anybody has any belief or faith in the decisions made for Wigan.
The arrogance of those in charge from the government downwards.
ps it was’ Cookery’ when I went to school..that covered a lot of things from scrubbing to baking apple pies and rock buns and sewing aprons and headbands, oh! and learning to look after one’s hands with Nulon hand cream..
Oh how I enjoyed Domestic Science..which included washing, ironing, starching, ugh.general cleaning and cooking..I wonder why it isn’t introduced to Schools now..I loved it.
Thank you Peter P and Irene.
Ticsmon, I agree with you about the origins of 'Believe' relating to Wigan Latics Football Club.
The stone base to the Whelan statue is inscribed
DAVE WHELAN
Professional Footballer
Entrepreneur
Wiganer
I took the photo on the 23rd October 2024
When I went to secondary school it was HOUSECRAFT. Then it changed to DOMESTIC SCIENCE. When my son & daughter were at secondary school it was FOOD TECHNOLOGY. Can't imagine what it is now.
I thought it cost millions of pound to sponsor a stadium usually by banks or big business, for that you get a corporate box with freebie’s for your mates. How does a charity pay for this and who benefits?????
When I first went to secondary school it was called HOUSECRAFT. Then it changed to DOMESTIC SCIENCE. When my son & daughter were at secondary school it became FOOD TECHNOLOGY. What is it now?
Veronica, I remember sewing a gingham apron and a headband with an elastic band. Our teacher used to bring her husband's socks and vests in for us to learn how to wash cotton and woollen clothing. Must have saved her a lot of washing on a Monday!
I don't think there's been a suitable sponsor found yet. The Brick deal is for this season to highlight the charity. I don't think they are putting any monies in.
The things those teachers had us doing Pat. The first lesson was how to set a tray with tray cloth! My mam had to go out and buy the cloth! I forgot to mention we had to take a manicure set as well as the hand cream.
Mind you everything I did learn stayed with me. Knitting, sewing , scrubbing but I don’t bake anymore! I had forgotten like you we learned to wash wool and cotton. That teacher of yours was a wily woman..
Oh that takes me back Veronica. Our first lesson was how to bake a potato
with cheese filling and while that was cooking we were taught how to iron a hanky.
These days we don’t even use hankies much Bradshaws Girl! What good was that!. I’ll let you into a secret I iron as little as possible. I still iron pillowcases though but not sheets or duvet covers.
I have to say I-don't iron as much these days because I dropped the iron onto my new carpet and the indent of it is still on the carpet!!! Mind you I was watching another repeat of “Gone With The Wind”when it happened….just as Rhett was carrying Scarlett up the stairs!
