Beautiful to look at with all the different colours of leaves but when they fall what a sticky mess.I remember as a child running through piles of leaves and if they were dry even playing hide and seek among the leaves.

A kaleidoscope of gorgeous colours - Summer’s parting gift…I think all the rain we’ve had has helped this year….

Lovely Autumn photo, Dennis. I know people get fed up with Autumn leaves but I love them when they are crisp underfoot, all those reds and oranges and yellows, although they can be dangerous when wet. Still, it's better than ice and snow.

that's a beautiful tree

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey.
I’ve been for a walk, on the way to Haigh.
Not quite California Dreaming by the Mammas and Papas but a lovely picture Dennis.

Beautiful photo Dennis. Driving round Wigan, it makes you realise how many lovely trees there are, but must about there are places where the council could do a bit of trimming. There are trees right behind where we live and it’s a full time job getting the leaves up.

What type of tree is this? It is difficult to say whether horse chestnut or sycamore.

I know its a personal view but I really don't like how, when Scholes (and many similar urban areas) etc was redeveloped in the 1960s/70s the new layouts usually incorporated large areas of grassland and planting along the road sides in place of the previous houses and shops.
I would much rather that these areas had built new housing (and some shops much closer to the existing road lines - perhaps with some small front gardens - much like the houses and shop you see on the right. behind the parked silver car.

By all means put more houses with gardens, play spaces etc within the redeveloped areas but very often these grassed roadside areas just don't look right and at times (especially at night) can seem threatening - who is hanging around there etc.

The whole character of Scholes etc was of a built up area with lots of communal facilities/shops and high visibility and ready access onto the main streets. This could have easily been replicated . Instead areas like this and eg Greenhough St, Scholes, Manchester Road often look empty and desolate rather than the busy hubs they used to be. but , as I say, its a personal view.

Very autumn Dennis. Who as a child, hasn't walked along a street or lane kicking up autumn leaves ?
Mind you most sycamore trees drop black spotted leaves these days...& they never seem golden as they lie in the gutter !

With hindsight Dennis, a display of pumpkins underneath would have been perfect for today!

I agree Carolaen especially now that more land is needed for building on.

Veronica. Thank you. I always think how good and characteristic of Wigan, is the street scene along most of Darlington St East ( my parents lived along there). Compare this to, when you turn the corner at Clarington Forge, and you get the bland open streetscape that is now Manchester Road.

At least some of the areas escaped demolition Carolaen. There’s half of Vauxhall Rd. Half of Belvoir St Half of Scholefield Lane and others …they must have run out of money.
Oh! And a dirt track with a few cobbles left at the start of Patrick St from the church which leads nowhere really..
