I know that "La Vie" is French and means "Life" but I couldn't help seeing it a "Lavie", (as in lavatory), at first glance as the letters are so close together, giving it a rather unfortunate name for a cafe! However, it looks very nice and I hope it does well.

You’ve taken the words out of my mouth Irene.
I can’t make out where the place is on Standishgate. It looks very smart. Imagine saying “I’ll see you in’t Lavvy for a coffee”..;o))

I thought the same Irene ! It does look a bit 'Soho' or 'Brighton' though with the colour.

Good morning Irene, I see what you mean.

Life and a cafe in French prompts a tale from the trench.

Brights disease, trench nephritis or war nephritis was a new disease during WW1. Over 35,000 British soldiers suffered from it and over 2,000 Americans. Military medics investigated, but they couldn't say what the cause was.
Human slaughter, poisons, cold, mud, the lack of necessariums and lavatorium or bains may have had something to do with it. Who knows? More recent study has revealed the answer.... Rats!
The disease did eventually finish off one of my ancestors.. after the war. He was a former medic in the RAMC on the western front (Hell on earth)

"Lavie cafe"

I hope it does well too.

Thank you Mick Byrne.

Veronica
It is on a corner just a bit lower down than The Millstone pub. I thought that would be classed as Wigan Lane, rather than Standishgate, but I might be wrong. I also think it is an unfortunate name. Never seen anybody in yet. They do breakfasts, but don’t serve bacon, so assume it is for religious reasons.

Glad you clarified this Irene otherwise I might have called in to spend a penny when walking down from The Millstone. A few nice shops up that part of Standishgate and the road is quiet these days since they built the bypass.
On another topic regarding the Covid Memorial Garden on yesterdays PAD, I went past today and they have lowered the tall hedges so you can see into it quite clearly from New Market Street and Bridgeman Terrace.

We'll have to meet up there for a cup of tea, ladies, but I bet we'll end up spending more than a penny!

This is Wigan lane near The Fox and Goose.

Veronica, on looking at Mick's photo I'm sure that it is where Cresta Car Accessories once was.

Just so long as it isn't like this Toronto Cafè - no way could I eat anything from there. https://www.businessinsider.com/poop-cafe-toronto-review-toilet-seats-desserts-2023-9

Must be La Vie, musn't it ?

Comment by: Veronica on 12th October 2024 at 16:00

It will always be Wigan Lane to me.
Thanks Kath and Cyril .
May I also say to TD you said it better than me and was there any wonder the diseases spread to kill so many.

Comment by: Brenda Bookworm on 12th October 2024 at 16:12

Yes, Wigan Lane by 150 yards or 137.16 meters.

Comment by: Alan P on 12th October 2024 at 17:57

There is a slight space between A and V, making it two words LA VIE

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 12th October 2024 at 18:22

Did Lavie Siffri sing Something Inside So Strong.

I was just testing haha hope everyone saw the funny side.Labbi it was and twas a good song.

It was Labi Siffre, John, (Westhoughton). Standishgate does extend further than we imagine it does, before it becomes Wigan Lane. My husband used to work at 118 Standishgate and it was quite a way up the hill. I always call that part "The Mab's Cross End" and, even after all these years, I think of the part of Standishgate we are all more familiar with as "The British Home Stores End"!

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 12th October 2024 at 21:03

Good one, John, (Westhoughton)! I must be a bit slow tonight.....the "Lavie" hadn't registered with me! I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer at times!

Irene, I love your comments ! mie1mAlan

Yes John he was another good singer of early 1970s fame, and who after a couple of songs in the charts and few appearances on TV shows just seemed to disappear.

You are more a less right Irene, with the boundary of Standishgate and Wigan Lane showing to be around where the top end of Mab's Cross School is.
As Kath H says they don't do any pork products instead you can have turkey bacon, chicken sausage and salmon, quite different from the usual fayre that can be had around there, it looks to be expensive but doesn't say if this includes the delivery charge. There are other La Vie cafes in other areas too, so maybe they do well with online orders - but not for me.
