Memorial

Memorial
The memorial to the victims of COVID on the old Grammar School Playing Field, Wigan.
I think the powers that be have made a good job of this, we are quick to criticise the things we don’t like but slow to praise the good things.
When this garden matures a little more it will be a great spot in the centre of the town.

That’s worth a visit Dennis and still you get people saying it never existed it beggars belief

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 11th October 2024 at 07:35

That looks very nice Dennis, simple clean lines & enhanced by the mature trees at the back.
Top marks to the designer.

A place of solace in our mad world to sit and remember our loved ones

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 11th October 2024 at 08:19

I couldn’t agree more Dennis, it’s money well spent creating a fitting memorial and a quiet place to sit tucked away behind those tall hedges and trees just across the road from the Market Hall.
Although I doubt many people know it exists, I don’t think I would have known if you had not posted a picture when it was first created.

Comment by: T on 11th October 2024 at 08:25

Had no idea this was there. Looks lovely, I'll have to pop for a look next time I'm in the town centre

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 11th October 2024 at 09:21

I have cut through that short-cut behind the hedges many times in the past but not been through since the memorial was installed. Trouble is, that in common with a lot of people, I hardly go to Wigan these days unless I have a medical appointment. I hope that the memorial stays unsullied by vandals and that its quiet setting becomes a place of peace and respect.

John(W) I just noticed the comments on yesterday’s PAD about cameras.
Nothing expensive or large and clumsy for me these days, they are all packed away in a drawer. Just an iPhone 13 which I am really pleased with especially the convenience and picture quality.

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 10:32

There must have been very many people died from that terrible disease and yet some people still do not believe the disease ever existed (as John says). I know some people who wouldn’t even have the vaccine or wear a mask.
I still think it was done deliberately by the Chinese. I don’t care what anybody says. It’s an evil regime for their own people and has been for years. Hand in glove with the Russians says it all.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 11th October 2024 at 12:11

I think these things just come along now and again, as did The Plague in the 1600s, the Spanish Flu in the early part of last century, the diphtheria in the 1930s, (which my older brother got), the polio epidemic in the 1950s and so on. I must admit I was a dreadful renegade, Veronica....oh dear! I objected strongly to being made to wear a mask and I only had the vaccine because my husband wouldn't stop going on about it and I had the vaccine to shut him up! If I lived alone I would have just pleased myself. We all have our own theories about it and our reasons and I respect other people's views. My son rabbits on every year about me making sure I have the flu vaccine so I let him think I have one, but I don't. (I'll get it in the neck now if he reads this!).

Comment by: Maureen on 11th October 2024 at 12:20

Well,I’m another that never knew it was there..I go to town twice a week and Thomas Linacre more than I like..but I will go to have a look next time..I’m another that believes it was done deliberately by the Chinese..horrible people!!!

Comment by: John (Westhoughton) on 11th October 2024 at 12:21

Colin I was just stating facts that you get what you pay for no malice with me,maybe Dennis was thinking I was having a dig but far from it I’d sooner help someone not hinder them,as I’m a bit rough and ready I choose to have a hand me down iPhone 7 plus due to it being in my pocket if cutting trees down or biking it’s ever so easy to read a text message the wrong way al si thi soon for a beer.

Comment by: Elizabeth on 11th October 2024 at 13:28

Yes,I agree with both Veronica and Maureen's theories as well.x

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 13:52

My own personal theory regarding the so-called ‘Spanish’ flu is that it could have been caused by so much ground churned up from one end of France to the other by the grotesque use of shells and bombardment-and the digging up of ground for the trenches and mining under them. Plus the rats! Men lived amongst them in the trenches…they lived off the dead..spreading disease. Just my opinion I’m sure there must be many other theories.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 11th October 2024 at 14:23

John(W) I am sure that none of us thought that you casting ‘nasturtiums’ on our equipment.
For me though simplicity is the key, I can’t quite get to terms with gadget's but some people just love it which is all well and good.
Rough and ready my backside, you are a perfect gentleman.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 11th October 2024 at 14:56

John, I wasn’t thinking you was having a dig. I was just saying that the Nikon, although much more expensive, turned out not to be very practical for taking pictures around town, it is more suitable for taking photos around Rivington and countryside like that.
The Sony DSC-HX99 is small enough to fit in my pocket and I can take it anywhere without the need for separate lenses and other equipment.

Comment by: WN2 on 11th October 2024 at 15:29

It doesn't seem to take much for this site to bring in racist comments. This is why some have left. China is a huge country, I have known many Chinese people, and would not collectively label them as horrible people. Presumably we will now bring asylum seekers into the postings.

Comment by: Ticsmon on 11th October 2024 at 15:54

With regards to 'Spanish flu'. Researchers believe the Spanish flu most likely originated in the United States.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 11th October 2024 at 16:00

Most ordinary citizens of every country are just "people" who just want to live their lives peacefully and see their children and grandchildren grow up. It is the so-called "leaders" and politicians who cause the problems. Whether we are British or Chinese, black or white, Catholic or protestant, gay or straight, brain surgeons or bin-men.....there are good people and there are bad people in every street, in every town, in every society and in every walk of life.

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 16:14

My comment was on the leaders WN2 not the people. Nothing racist in the comment. The same as the Russian people who daren’t speak out! Well I say what I think that’s what my forefathers fought for. We don’t live in a country that suppresses free speech. They may try it on but it won’t work. In the same way you are trying it on.

Comment by: John (westhoughton) on 11th October 2024 at 16:15

No problem at all it’s turned out nice again Colin/Dennis that Moon under Water keeps calling………

Comment by: MikeW on 11th October 2024 at 17:13

Having watched my 90 year old father die of respiratory failure in isolation as a result of developing covid I very much welcome this memorial. I can also assure the naysayers and the ignorant that the condition is real, serious and far from being a laughing matter.

Comment by: Mark on 11th October 2024 at 17:40

Nonsense! WN2 . People lost loved ones and want to know the truth ! How in heaven’s name do you associate a passionate human reaction to racism?
China was scrubbing something out , is it racism for families of those who lost loved ones to question that ? China slammed the door in their faces - loudly and with disgusting arrogance .
In the human values of decency , humanity
and a warmth of caring for each other , China offered us an abandoned fridge , belonging to no one . I thank God we have been made different.

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 17:57

Ticsmon I read that too about the disease starting in the United States. Very strange they came into the war in 1917 and the war ended in 1918. The flu progressed later and I believe killed more people than were killed during the war.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 11th October 2024 at 18:19

Mike W, I am very sorry to hear about your Father, if I was the one "laughing", I was laughing at myself, no-one else, with regard to the masks and vaccinations, and trying to bring a little light-heartedness to this post as I could see which way it was going . I DID object to wearing a mask, I admit, but I wore one nevertheless. If I had got covid, or if I get flu, through not having vaccinations, then that is my own fault, but it is also my body and my choice. I had already stated in an earlier comment that I think the memorial is lovely and that I hope it will be respected and prove to be a place where people can sit and reflect in peace.

Comment by: Ticsmon on 11th October 2024 at 19:43

Why do you find it strange that the US came into the war in 1917 and the war ended in 1918?

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 20:33

As you say it started in America and the Americans came over to fight in the war. Did they bring the virus??? Or not…?

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 20:36

Not intentionally bring the virus with them!

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 11th October 2024 at 22:02

I personally have every jab offered after spending 18 days in hospital mostly on the high dependency ward with pneumonia but that’s my choice and respect other people’s choice.

Comment by: Ticsmon on 11th October 2024 at 22:27

So it didn't start in the trenches with so much ground churned up from one end of France to the other by the grotesque use of shells and bombardment-and the digging up of ground for the trenches and mining under them and the rats? It was brought over by American soldiers?

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 23:19

Now let me think…it wouldn’t have helped now would it -(IF and only IF ) it had been (inadvertently) brought over it would have contributed to the mass of upheaval in the land ….
Just a thought but it seems the nit pickers are on fire today.
Well it’s goodnight from me. Pleasant dreams everyone.

Comment by: Veronica on 11th October 2024 at 23:21

Ps when using other people’s words you should use quotation marks! Or didn’t you know.?

Comment by: John (Westhoughton) on 11th October 2024 at 23:31

Good night dear.

Comment by: T. D. on 11th October 2024 at 23:33

Buenas noches.

Comment by: Veronica on 12th October 2024 at 00:20

Or as our American cousins would say .G’night y’all ,,,xx
