The Amazing Gathurst Viaduct
What a cracking atmospheric picture Mick.
Thousands of people including myself have walked/cycled along this stretch of the canal and took in the views both along the canal and looking upwards at the bridge
I’ll be cycling through to Parbold windmill later hopefully last stretch from bottom of Parbold hill to the windmill is not to waterlogged.
A good photo; I love the clouds and the reflections in the water.
A great photo, make a good jig saw pic.
Looks like rain on its way.
Very nice picture Mick, the reflections of both bridge and clouds on the rippling blue water look like the brush strokes of an oil painting. Love it!
I remember cycling along that stretch of the motorway and over the viaduct during the M6 construction in the 60's on my way from Shevington to Upholland Grammar School. Had to come off on Gathurst Road but it saved pushing the bike up hill at Gathurst. Fond memories.
Great photo Mick.
Lovely picture. The calm before the storm.
Don’t say that John I have just washed all the bedding!
Lovely sky and reflections but I certainly wouldn’t want to live so close to the bridge. Lovely houses!
What a great pic Mick, love the sky and the reflections in the canal.
Well caught !
I have just recently stared to work for a fabrication company where one of their product lines is manufacturing metal bridges. The amount of time and engineering and then testing done is phenomenal.
The shop we have is massive. We are currently working on 70 different projects with the lowest value being $500,000.
Thought I might have seen you today Mick along that stretch, I see those bags off stone are still there near the Haigh Hall along canal shall we get stuck in and gerrit done for um?
I have it on good authority that a certain contributor to this forum
( no names … no pack drill ) was , during his tender and perceived immortal years , in the habit of crossing this viaduct during its construction by balancing on the steel girders .
I am also reliably informed that the names of several other participants in this ill advised venture still remain painted graffiti style on the inside of the steelwork of the structure .
I mention this just on the off-chance that anyone should care to go up there and investigate the validity of this claim .
I doubt you’ll find the name ‘ Banksy ‘ among them to be fair , but nonetheless , I trust I’ll be kept informed with regards to your findings.
Ozy that’s sum height I was tempted to take a photo of the underside from the towpath today but iPhone 7 not a patch on Micks or Dennis’s or Colin’s cameras.
I’ve had a number of cameras over the years John , some of them costing a few Bob an’ all although I’ve never actually owned one that was in the same league as the one that Frank Orrell used .
That said , my iPad takes much sharper photos than any SLR I’ve ever owned and I would imagine these modern iPhones take even clearer shots , but they don’t exactly give Iphone 15s away do they ?
By contrast , my 25 quid 2G phone from Tesco takes photos not too dissimilar to an impressionist landscape taken through a frosted glass toilet window .
Bottom line … it’s worth remembering that you only get what you’re prepared to pay for .
And even then … not always .
Ozy you hit the nail on the head.
I agree with you Ozy about the cameras. I have a Nikon D 7500, but the little Sony that I have takes photos just as good and is far more practical than the Nikon.
The difference in price makes the Sony a more useful buy.
