Sheila's Stall in the Market Hall

Sheila's Stall in the Market Hall
Roll up, Roll up for a fine selection of ladies jumpers and tops.
Not that many ‘long standing’ stall holders left in the Market Hall but I think Sheila may stick it out to the bitter end. Whenever that might be!

So called no cameras allowed in the market hall or is a phone not a camera?

Wigan (Labour) Council operates like some form of secret society never open or informing people as to what’s going on
The new market hall should have opened this year, then work was supposed to commence in September, here we are in October and still no sign of any activity.

I remember the other stall, Gibson and Young, from the old Market Hall; it was just to the left as you came in through the main doors and sold tea-sets and ornaments. I have a dvd of the last days of the old market hall, and the stall-owner is interviewed, along with many other stall-holders. The film is now a piece of history in itself. You can watch it on youtube....."Wigan Market Hall, The Final Days".

It’s surprising that there’s folk that still go in there. I hope she doesn’t have to pay any rent as they should pay her for keeping open in that void of emptiness.

PeterP, I don’t know if that’s true or not but it wouldn’t surprise me.
The KGB (WMBC) as WN6 points out are a very secretive organisation.
Next time I’m in there I’ll look for the sign and take a photograph and see if I get arrested and sent to a Gulag!

We went on a Caribbean Cruise before Covid that cost an arm and a leg. I looked at some lovely tops to wear in the Royal Arcade but got four from Sheila’s for less than the price of one. Everyone thought they looked fabulous and very expensive, naturally I just smiled in smug agreement.

Its so sad to see, a market of many, many years just ruined. Wiganers ought to tell Wigan councillors how they feel about what has been done to the town but there again it seems the said councillors are all sitting on the same bench...never good.... no opposition so they do whatever they like. What a state of affairs.

Comment by: John Noakes on 7th October 2024 at 11:11

Helen, the councillors are powerless against the council. Wiganers can tell them whatever they want, but it will have no effect.

Colin sorry to deviate but good news has arrived from the January 5th they are operating the 615 bus,Bolton to Wigan via Aspull,New Springs etc after 5 years absence.

Councillors have almost zero authority these days, planning approvals are never resisted because the government planner will push it through at great cost to us. You only need watch the meetings on YouTube to see what a farce they are. Wearing a red tie is a pass for election to an allowance between £14k and £69k

Over the years there's been umpteen demonstrations at the original town hall and later at the new town hall, and there's been reams full of signed petitions handed in, and did the elected council at the time listen to the townsfolk - The Ratepayers - NO!
If Wiganers had the ideology of the French then long before now the roads and even the M6 would have been barricaded and closed to traffic, the authorities would have then hopefully listened and acted upon what the people of Wigan actually wanted. 'Viva la Wigan'

Does anyone remember a lady called Edna who used to work for gibson and young in the old market hall on the stall were she sold ornaments on the left side .

I am so please that the 615 is returning. My favourite bus to Wigan…having said that there’s nothing to go there for anymore. Glad for the folk on Dicconson Lane though.

John (W) thanks for the ‘Heads Up’ on that, good news for some.
Living in Standish we normally get the bus into Chorley and then the bus to Bolton, a very pretty route over Rivington whatever the season.

Acts of Parliament are there to be followed to the letter.
Wigan is no different to anywhere else in England (contrary to popular belief) and the council must follow the planning laws, regardless of what the councillors want.
