Market Place
Been away from Wigan for more than half a century. A bit of a shock to see the Rushton's building from Market Place.
Nice view of the mock tudor buildings. I wonder if any of the 1st and 2nd floors are used?
Great photo Dennis. I hope those buildings never change, they are inprinted in my photographic memory.
PS. Re the photo of Plank Bridge yesterday. It was featured again on last night's Canal Boat Diaries.
Good photo Dennis we always get a decent deal with Hays Travel they were very lucky to survive through the pandemic. All those shops seem to be occupied,a different story on Lord Street Southport yesterday a once thriving street, now lucky if 50% of the shops are occupied not good.
Helen we will see if we can find Canal Boat Diaries on catchup cheers.
A major landmark in Wigan. All the ex-pats will remember that building.
Hays Travel used to be one of the gents outfitters and boyfriend and I used to wait in that doorway ‘snogging’ waiting for my last bus home to Standish.
I too have often wondered what it is like in those upstairs rooms. I remember catching the bus there by the underground toilets when I worked in Standish and seeing "Miss Winkleman" walking past on her way to her boutique in Wallgate, and I recall the disapproving remarks of the old ladies in the queue! I was only about 19 or 20 and she looked so glamorous with a pale blue mini-dress and her long shiny black hair. When I worked in Boots many years later, an older lady, beautifully made up, with long black hair, stylish clothes, sunglasses and a big black hat used to come in and one of the girls told me it was Miss Winkleman. It's odd the memories that photos bring back.
Linma,Hays Travel was Jacksons the Tailor.
Thank you Pw.
