Plank Lane Lift Bridge
We have walked from Abram to there a few times through Crankwood Village and then walked back to Abram along the canal.
Very interesting picture John, I did know such bridges existed over the canal.
I can’t see your trademark bike, is it on the bridge?
I meant to say DIDN’T know!
I wonder if Robbie Cummings has been through there with the Naughty Lass with the programme Canal Boat Diaries when he explode Greater Manchester Canals!
I know many won’t agree …..The mechanical bridge is a great feat of engineering but it doesn’t ‘ blend’ into the countryside as the old wooden locks did.
Colin I was sat on bike, that’s the first time I’ve seen the bridge up in years and the lady was asking the man that operated the bridge….is that as high as it goes he replied no but it’s high enough for you smiling.I delivered coal from Bickershaw Colliery to Burtonwood RAF Base and Carringhton Power Station early 70 ties but all gone now and what a transformation around that bridge now, there was always a man with a bike near there collecting coal that had spilled from wagons on the bend and throwing a full bag on to his crossbar then pushing his bike home.I’ll be passing through Wigan around 13.50 today on the train to Southport for a couple of drinks at the bar at the end of the pier,Frank Sinatra’s Tom Jones Etc Etc should be a good day to brighten up all the gloomy other days.Julie,Roby as definitely passed under that bridge, take it easy everyone catch you later…….
I can remember taking my rescued greyhound to a dog physio in Crankwood Village.
Irene you must’ve walked past Hanlon concrete products down Crankwood Lane I’ve delivered 20ton loads of limestone from Burton in Kendal there also early 70 ties they make panels for fencing etc.
The bar at the end of the pier is a ripoff as you would expect with it being in that location.
If you were smart, take your ale i n a cooler bag, then go to the Swan chippy for an early tea.
Julie, I think he did in a programme recently when he went through Wigan. He gets very worried about making cars wait while he gets though, he runs up & down so to be as quick as he can..I would say...Don't worry Robbie let them wait !
Is Southport pier open?
Haven't been along Plank Lane and Slag Lane for some years now, and looking on Google maps the area looks totally different from those days.
I've had a google and surprisingly can't find any photos of the ancient wooden cantilever bridge which was there before this steel one, though thinking back I'm sure I've seen on the web at one time a cine camera film of this area, it was showing the wooden bridge operating and also scenes of the pit and the buildings along Crank Road.
I know Helen of troy i saw one episode were he went and moved the bridge and tried to be quick because cars were waiting to cross over the bridge.
Tom no singers today and £8.80 for a pint of bitter and a pint of larger so not to bad. We stayed at the Grand Hotel in Litham for 1 night last April Fabulous place But we had four half’s of larger before tea and four half’s after watching a tribute band at the Lowther Theatre the bar bill was £52 for 4 pints that is a ripoff grandstile.

The Grand is not a ripoff if appreciate the ambience of the place and how the drinks are served.
PW sad to say Southport Pier is still closed and no funds to do whatever is needed.
