Round The Bend
Looks like a horse on the left of the photo.
A lovely photo Dennis.
Some notable locals who lived along this road in the 1960's were Dr.Chadwick and John Wild on the left with Ted &Rita Hanley(Cassinellis) on the right
A lovely village scene, Dennis. I have always liked that area and remember when the premises with the sign up on the wall was the post office.
Must be a bit of a slog up the slope to that bend on a push bike, but free wheeling back down to the fingerpost......wheee!
I couldn't think of a worse place to live with all that heavy traffic, braking and then excellerating at that dangerous blind bend.
This small area is like stepping back in time. Then the view hits you around the top. I don’t remember the garage.
When I was little the older end would refer to "up 'aigh" or "t'fingerpost" or "daen't lone." An outrider was "scot lone" and the distant lands of top Lock or "t' Springs" while Hindley, apart from t' maerket was often mentioned in the same breath as Daisy Hill.
Good photo, Dennis.
The left half of the photo might be Top of Haigh, the right half is Top of Aspull.
They found accelerating on a velocipede more exhilarating without braking.....wheeee!
Yes it is a horse on the left of the photo, a shame more of it wasn't captured.
It must have been that grid that caused mi motorbike to go spinning down Haigh Road and dumping me and a girl friend outside the Red Lion one Saturday night in 1964? a few people came out and took us into pub cleaned us up and said now take it easy as we jumped back on bike and off after thanking them.TD it’s not to bad cycling up to that bend and no need to touch the pedals till you get to the Haigh Hall car park that was the route doing Manchester to Blackpool ride.
It doesn't look as posh as Standish! Although the Balcarres to the left does serve good food.
Anne, I have sent another photo with the TWO horses on, but it’s not up to me wether it’s used or not.
Does any one remember the petrol station in the 60s when rolly Hill used to own it i used to go with my grandad in the old consul and he used to fill your car up for you when he came from a hut in the middle of the forecourt, them were the good times.
There aren’t too many hills that pose a problem when you’re riding an electric bike . Even Alpe d’Huez .
I do Julie and also remember the Ford Consul with the vacuum wipers, put your foot down and the wipers almost stopped there was plenty room in the mk 2 Consul.
Lovely photo Dennis,my favourite area around Wigan and District.
I agree with Fausto, electric bikes are nowt but rechargeable mopeds . Bonsoir mes amis .
The Hill family still run the garage although the petrol station part of it went years ago. There is still a workshop and a car showroom on site. Roly was of the old school of mechanics, he wouldn't just take a part off and replace with new, he'd try and repair the old unit. A lovely Gentleman, I believe his local was the other side of the finger posts on the left, was it the Running Horses / Wagon and Horses ?
