Must be a nice area of Wigan to live, having that lovely lake on the doorstep.

It was called Westlake for a time, but now gone back to the local name ,'Clayhole'.

It irritates me that such a lovely area is called the“Clayhole”! I could think of a lot nicer name…as I am sure others could. I was sent a beautiful snowy scene last Winter but it wasn’t accepted on here.

I spent many an hour fishing on there when i was a child. There was only a row of bungalows along one side then.

In this troubled country...& world, people just get on with their daily lives. Its the only way to cope because there is nothing they or we can do about it. Dennis has captured it in a nutshell.

I had no idea The Clayhole was like that....what a hive of activity! When I was at school in Hindley in the 1960s I went to a friend's house in Hindley Green and she took me to The Clayhole and it was just a body of water....obviously it had been developed over the years. Elizabeth, people will always stick to the old local names....Kingsdown Flash in Abram will always be "Auntie Polly's" and Low Hall Nature Reserve in Platt Bridge will always be "Sammy's Flood" whatever fancy names the council decide to give them! A nice photo, Dennis, as always.

Lovely photo Dennis, a place I have never been. As Elizabeth says it is also known as Westlake.
It was originally excavated for its clay for the many brick factories in the area principally for the mining industry.

The Spinners Arms in Hindley Green used to have open fishing matches on Sunday mornings which I won quite a few times when I was a lad.

You certainly get about Dennis I sometimes pass the Clayhole on Sundays to extend my ride from Platt Bridge, those Canada Geese are everywhere these days,by the way Dennis I had a look at a bungalow in St Mary’s Close that would be handy for a walk round for a catchup with Carl Roberts on Haigh Road whilst he’s servicing is trucks at weekends (the bungalow needed a little to much to get to my liking pity)

It’s not the council that names bodies of water, it’s the environment agency.

It's so sad on photo-a-day when someone makes a mockery of a Wigan World member's true name day after day but is too cowardly to post comments under their own name. It's beyond pathetic.

Irene class it as water of a ducks back I certainly would, all the decent people on here would definitely support you no need for childish remarks.

Thanks John....this has happened to me before, and to Veronica.....where a moron was transposing the letters of our names to make another rather silly name. It wouldn't surprise me if this is the same person. If this was a children's website I would imagine it was a child. To think it is is an adult doing this beggars belief. "Roberts Irate", you have mis- used my name over three days now ..... if you haven't got the courage to use your own name to comment on my posts, and to give me a fair opportunity to reply, then please keep your opinions to yourself.

It’s always in the school holidays Irene when 3rd rate Rob appears. Should be going back very soon.
