When I lived in Stoney Brow,Roby Mill in the 1940's I seem to remember these cottages just higher than the stone quarry going up to vicarage corner.

Stony Brow , it rang a bell in the memory so I looked it up....Dear Oh Dear...what is this country coming to. Google maps gave its location as....Stoney Brow, Upholland, Roby Mill, Skelmesdale !!

Chocolate box cottages.
Privet for privacy it seems.

What a lovely peaceful scene. I agree with Veronica....it reminds me of the scenes on the lids on boxes of chocolates in the 1950s and 1960s ....a lovely cottage scene with a beautiful ribbon round it ; people used to save the boxes to hold hankies or stationery.

Very pretty Dennis.

Helen, I think that I am correct in saying that Upholland, Roby Mill, Dalton and Parbold were one classed as Wigan Rural District Council.
In the 1970’s with the new town of Skelmersdale created as overspill for Liverpool and reorganisation of boundaries all were hived off into West Lancashire many now classed as Skelmersdale. Don’t know what the locals made of it but I know they don’t qualify for the £10 annual charge for free train travel anywhere any day throughout Greater Manchester. It’s a real boon for me.

Dennis, pardon me for this intrusion but on this day in 18th August 1908 a terrible event in the history of Abram occurred and I thought it worth remembering.
An underground explosion at Maypole Pit killed 76 men and boys. Many of the victims were buried in the graveyard of St John The Evangelist, Abram.
I did sent a photo of the the Memorial but it did not appear today so I did not want this to pass without recognition.
Two years later an even worse event happened at the Pretoria Pit near Westhoughton when 344 men and boys lost there lives.
All these folk and many more in the Lancashire Coal Fields lost there lives in those decades to keep the wheels of industry turning and the home fires burning.
Again, apologies for the intrusion on you lovely picture.

I remember Skelmersdale when it was not much more than a small town Colin, that the bus went through when I was on my way to school in Ormskirk. We had moved south by the time the Liverpudlians arrived !

Colin, I have emailed you a photo of my "Maypole" commemorative window for this year. We in Abram will be lighting candles at ten past five, the time the explosion happened. Our lovely Dennis is used to us all "going off the subject" and am sure he won't mind!

Comment by: Tommy Pilky on 18th August 2024 at 17:05

I think a lot of those who used to leave sensible comments on PAD minded about people going off subject, that's why not many do comment anymore.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 18th August 2024 at 21:14

Mr. Pilky, I had already commented on Dennis's photo of the cottage at 9.24 this morning ....Dennis adds fabulous photos that never disappoint and I always comment on them. If the uploader of the photo doesn't mind people passing on a message to another Wigan World member, then why should YOU? And neither my comment nor Colin's weren't "sensible"....they were both sensible and polite with an apology for intruding and they certainly didn't stop anyone else from commenting. on the photo.

Comment by: Veronica on 18th August 2024 at 22:50

If that’s the case Tommy Pilky they mustn’t have been all that interested in the photos.
I have only ever seen
‘ sensible’ comments from Irene.

Mr Pilky is a bit of a moron best ignored.

Yet I can understand people being put off though with the Argy Bargy boards especially.
