This Old House
Deansgate, Hindley.
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-HX99)
There can’t be anyone living in that house it’s practically derelict. Even the satellite dish is rusty. George (from Hindley) might know something about it. He’ll probably say it’s not in Hindley though…as it’s a figment of our imagination..
This dwelling may be of some historical interest, but no one is living there at the moment Dennis and obviously the owners don't seem to be bothered about it.
Knob Hall is a very old and small former farm house cottage in need of some TLC.
Note the finial on the Apex with a missing sphere and other 'Knobs' missing from the building.
Good job Dennis.
I can remember seeing that house in the 1960s when I was at school in Hindley. Someone from school lived in Deansgate.....I can't even recall who it was but they lived in a house called "Deansgarth", and I remember being fascinated by the house in the photo. I have never been in Deansgate since then!
A poor looking dwelling now but would have been looked after in happier days. It could be 'listed', because it's still standing surrounded by more modern properties.
This house always looked pristine in the 70's and 80's,I used to think it could have been in Devon or Cornwall then,it looked so appealing.! I believe it's been unoccupied for a long time.
Interesting building Dennis, I imagine at one time being quite nice before all that housing was built and left to decay. Perhaps it had far more land that was sold off for housing and the original owner moved out with their booty.
A old women lives in it, how can some of you snobs say the dwelling is not fit to be lived in.
Nothing to do with Snobbery, the house is in a sad and sorry state. As long as the lady is happy there, that’s the most important thing. I am sure we all wish her well.
Hi(George?) from Hindley. You must be dreaming.
Wigan Snob, isn’t that an oxymoron.
A bit like Australian Culture?
If not it certainly a contradiction in terms.
Hi, the person who did live in it doesn't live in it, but it is fit for you to live in it.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I WENT PASSED THIS HOUSE LAST YEAR. I THOUGHT THEN IT LOOKED LIKE IT MUST HAVE HAD SOME SIGNIFICANCE. AS IT IS SURROUNDED BY FAIRLY MODERN HOUSES. IS "KNOB HALL" IT'S PROPER NAME, OR IS IT JUST A LOCAL NAME FOR IT??
Looking at it I got the feeling that it must have been someone’s pride and joy once.
As you get older it becomes harder and harder to do the repairs that you did without thinking when you were younger.
Life is a cruel Master.
You are right Dennis it would have been
“someone’s pride and joy”. That’s why it’s always best to keep on top of things a bit here and a bit there over time. I wonder what the age of it is.
Veronica - You are correct there is no one living there.
Elizabeth - Pristine in the 70's and 80's, but it was still occupied up until the last couple of years.
Helen of Troy - You are correct the dwelling (Knob Hall) is now in a poor state.
Colin - Your concern is commendable, unfortunately there is no one living there now. The last lady to live there passed away some years ago, and sadly the gentlemen who lived there until recent years have also both passed away.

Dennis - you are spot on.
Ron - Knob Hall is it's name on Deansgate, formerly Vipers Alley on old maps. Wigan coal and iron co had the land at one time, and from a recent subsoil survey for a recent new build they hit coal 20m below the surface.
Irene - From the 1968 Hindley directory the Peet family lived at Deansgarth?
Ron - No 5 Deansgate appears on the 1925 Hindley directory as Knob Hall.
Thankyou TD.....the memory is very vague; I was at Hindley Grammar from 1964-1969 so it may have been pre-1968. I can't recall the person who lived at "Deansgarth" ; it may even have been a "friend-of-a-friend".....I just remember going up Deansgate to "Deansgarth" and seeing the house shown in today's p-a-d; the name Peet doesn't ring a bell at all but it WAS a long time ago....I have no idea if "Deansgarth" even still stands! But thankyou for taking the trouble to look it up and for passing on the information.
Thank you TD, no one knows any of our circumstances, one thing I do know is that none of us are snobs and we do have consideration for others.
What a coincidence! In the 1911 census 1 of my ancestors lived at 5 Deansgate, and I looked at the street on Google Maps just yesterday. I didn't even know where it was, being a Bickershaw girl. Note, I am in Australia, enjoying its humorous culture.
Yer all wrong, because a Witch lives there, and if you say anything nasty about her, she will turn yoo into a toad, so think on and say nowt.
You’re getting closer to Westhoughton Dennis, that house as only recently been left to deteriorate,we used to frequent the Castaways Nightclub on Bridge Street in between Deansgate and Danes Avenue.
Aussie, Aussie humour is drier than a dead dingo’s donger.
OZ has loads of crane toads....g'day.
Oops! Cane toads are an invasive species in OZ.... G'day.
My GRT GRT GRT grandparents lived here and My Grt GRt Grandparents, it has always been know as Knob Hall within the family and locally.
Since being a child I have always been fascinated with this place and would have loved to have live there. Sadly it needs so much work doing. I would love to see inside and feel the atmosphere of relatives of yesteryear.
