Arley Hall and Moat, Haigh
The present Hall dates from the 17th Century but the Moat itself dates from the 13th.
Both are classified by Historic England as a Scheduled Monument.

Good shot!
Stunning, best picture posted in quite a while.
I bet that moat if it was really well dredged would come up with some interesting finds besides golf balls.
An elegant photo today I notice the ‘English’ flag flying….( well drooping it as it looks like there’s no breeze.)
A fine picture Colin . Went by here just a few days back on a walk to Adlington .
It really is one of the most enchanting stretches of canal in the district .
The hall and moat always reminds me of some caper from P.G .
Wodehouse .
Poet - agree, fine picture.
Re P G Wodehouse, beware the aunts and the cloven hoof!
Veronica, you can find some fascinating information and history on Arley Hall, Haigh if you Google:
Wigan Archaeological Society - Arley Mills Project
Technically, I believe that it is Blackrod, Bolton but the post code is WN1 but in my opinion it has too long been associated with Wigan and I doubt if anyone in Bolton has even heard of it.
Poet you are so very right.
That day I walked for miles from Leyland Mill lane, up Hall lane and into the Plantations taking the route from the Iron Bridge over the canal to Red Rock and then on down Arley Lane to the Arley Hall though the Golf Course. More beautiful scenery I have not seen in many a year.
I took some incredible pictures along the way, one in particular of two swans with four signets that came over to me as I sat on a grassy bank at the side of the canal. I do hope they appear on pad one day along with others.
The walk back to Standish up Rectory Lane was a killer, I'll have to get a bike!!!!!! or share a tandem with John (W)
PS, I overlooked to mention that it is open to none members, so I took the opportunity to sit for a while on the terrace you can see with large glass of my favourite cold tipple.
There used to be a black swan on the moat, i remember it from a few years ago, somehow i doubt it's still there.
Roy, at least one Black Swan is still there, I took a picture and have sent this in the hope it appears on pad, I am sure everyone would like it.
The school kids who lived in that area went to school on a donkey and when it died they buried it in the grounds of the hall.
Locals used to say that if ever the black swans of Arley vanished the hall would collapse into the moat.
It's also been said that many people leaving the hall late at night saw a ghost of a women feeding the black swans.
Wigan Golf Club should be in Wigan.
Lovely photo Colin. I went there with a friend some years ago and I recall cricket items being hung on he walls as you walked in, and there was a grave in the grounds where a donkey was buried. The donkey apparently used to take children to school on his back and was much-loved. Thankyou for the photos you sent to my email last week and my apologies for not replying but I have got a new phone and had problems with it....I haven't been able to access emails, google, Wigan World or facebook since last Wednesday, hence my lack of p-a-d comments. Hopefully been sorted this morning at the Vodafone shop!
Much better photo than yesterday Colin,so that is definitely the golf coarse that I struggled to shove my bike up to after crossing the River Douglas and no warning signs (Beware of Flying Balls)as there is when cycling through Rhyl golf coarse.By the way Colin we visited Eton last year and walked past the college/cloister etc amazing architecture very interesting place.
John, many years ago I was driving into Altrincham from the south and suddenly saw a man drop to the pavement. I stopped and ran back, he was dazed but okay then some golfers came out of the park looking for their ball !!!!!
Glad you had a good time in Windsor, our friends want us to do one of those Pullman Train trips with them to Windsor but there’s only a short time there.
Wasn’t there a politician who was once sacked for putting cleaning his moat as one of his parliamentary expenses ?
It looks to be a nice area to sit and to have Tiffin Colin, though a place I've never been to.
John, glad to hear that they have flying balls at Rhyl, because at St Andrews not only are balls flying they have flying haggis too.
Gary , if you look long enough at the picture you're bound to see the ' Oldest Member ' wander out onto the terrace with a G&T . You can't miss him , for he looks exactly like C . Aubrey Smith .
Poet - as if poured into his suit and forgot to say when!
Colin if you decide to go to Windsor the chapel inside the castle is only open certain days and to be sure you are better ringing and booking we only stayed for a couple of days at the Holiday Inn Express with parking £15 24hrs parking 0.7 mile walk to Windsor Castle and last year a brand new lodge type accommodation with Windsor racecourse across the Thames and GoGo’s restaurant next door brilliant but expensive.
Aussie do you live anywhere near a place called Tittybong? We have a friend who runs a chicken joint there.
Ooops! Sorry wrong post.
