Getting along the tow path nicely John. Good photo of the Baby (white) elephant.

The former Navigation pub beside the L&L navvies cut that was opened in 1816. Donkeys years before traction engines and the steam crane invented by Ludwig the German who's surname I can't pronounce or spell, but I'll have a stab at Shtuckenholme. The navvies progress had also been slowed down by beer hawkers with barrels on hand carts. Took those navvies donkeys years to finish the job... Mmm. Shame about the canal side pubs shutting. Bobbies in the old days were known to call in on their rounds. Not suggesting they drank on duty, or forgetting local plod Alexander Mitchell who drowned after falling in the cut at Ince on his night patrol, age 44, Wednesday, 23rd Feb, 1887.
Most of us have gained our 25yd certificate these days. Still.. who would fancy ending up in the murky, cold cut under the cover of darkness with their soggy clogs dragging them down...not me.
Take care there.

It is in a sad and sorry state. We used to go in quite often in the 80’s and the restaurant in the conservatory at the side used serve traditional pub food. Then it changed to The Baby Elephant and like Chinese Restaurants, they are not as popular to dine in as they were, seen these days as more of a takeaway.
Superb location for a canal side pub, a bit like the Crawford Arms at Red Rock, just needs a major investment and rebranding. Last I heard it was up for sale for £450k. Any offers?

Thanks for posting John, really sad though this one for me, had some really special times in here, so to see it like this broken and forgotten is a bit of a choker .

Surely that building could be saved during this supposedly ‘recycling age’ we live in….(anything I hate is (a) graffiti. (b)litter.) Never fails to lower the surroundings. Even in the Eternal City of Rome and other major cities.

Is this ' pub' by the canal at Gathurst Bridge ? I'm sure it was an Indian restaurant when we were there by the canal looking for rhe house my grandparents lived in when they moved down from Scotland to Wigan .

Now then, now then were is this pub located, I say Shevington but the husband says it's in Gathurst.

Betty Boo, it’s Gathurst next to the Station just down the road from Shevington on the way to Orrell.
Unfortunately the pub on Gathurst Station is also closed and boarded up. Times they are a changing!

The pub is actually in Shevington, the border line is the river Douglas.

Yes TD I was heading back to Wigan last Thursday from Parbold and decided to carry on to Top Lock and there I met a couple from Whelley that had just had a great afternoon in The Colliers and they were telling me a Micro Brewery from Westhoughton had took the downstairs over and it’s definitely worth a call as they will be returning, sorry for late response as I’ve just sat down been walking up Rivington and cutting hedges till 7pm always seem to be busy.

No problem Dave I’ve been looking at accommodation in Richmond for our future adventure.
