Top Lock
Photo: John (Westhoughton) (iPhone)
Unusual to see that gate open.
I wish there was a canal in Westhoughton John. Do you mean the biker branch? It looks very quiet folk must still be abed.
John (W) I presume that’s ‘Have Bike Will Travel?’
I really like canal views, they’re always so relaxing.
I thought some one had pinched Shevy Micks bike and dumped it at the side of the canal
My father was born at 70 Withington Lane in 1907 the canal was at the back of a very high wall in the back yard
Favors thi wor yeadin towards yon land o Luddite activists and poverty, poverty knocks.
John, by saying "that's as far as they got", who are you referring to?
George the navvies but I think the money ran out that bridge was the start and finish of the planned Westhoughton branch.
George, I think that they made the spur intending that the canal should have continued to Westhoughton but they either ran out of money or water or both!!!!
Ken I new a two sisters that lived at Top Lock area Olive and Irene they were a bundle of fun going back almost 60 years.
Veronica I did reply to you Colin and Toplocker but seems to have gone elsewhere will try later.
John, the Lancaster Canal cutting continues for almost 1/4 of a mile beyond that point to Cale Lane junction.
Colin, I read that the Lancaster Canal Company's plans were scuppered by the local landowning gentry who disagreed with the project?
T.D. Sounds like you’re getting read for the Wigan Diggers Festival 7th September in ‘I Don’t Believe It’s Butter Square’. See you there, lode’s o’ Wigi speyk the yon lad.
John (Westhoughton)
Are you referring to Oiive and Irene Brown. They lived in Cale Lane.
Things have changed nowadays TD the rich land is going for rich people to build big fancy houses on. It’s what some people call a “sought/ sort after area”.
(Yep I know it’s misspelt but that’s how some people spell it.). Trouble is we haven’t got the facilities to support them these days.
Kath H I was never sure exactly where Olive and Irene lived or their last names but they both worked at Lostock Mill around 1967 but Brown does ring a bell ……pleasant girls.
Veronica I’m not aware of a direct route off road to the canal, that photo was took about 2pm on Wednesday of last week and it was fleeing I rode through Standish to Parbold then joined the canal at the bottom of the hill and back to Haigh Hall it’s a good ride.Colin you presumed correct (Have Bike Will Travel)
John (Westhoughton)
My cousin Mildred Walker worked at Lockstock Mill and my brother Derek Moore. Did you know them?
Gud un Colin, thanks for the info.
Veronica - I shall visit the polling station on the 4th of July, scribe my mark (x) and pray the next lot will be better than the last set of clowns. Not expecting a miracle overnight, but sorting problems like the bus service in howfen would be a decent start.
Toplocker the gate was open due to the Canal and River Trust doing maintenance ‘twas 2pm Wednesday of last week
Kath I new a Mildred but not Derek I only worked there for maybe 18 months in the loading bay mostly from 1965 if it’s the same Mildred she had a boyfriend from Westhoughton called Jimmy Scott for a good few years not sure of her last name sorry.
