I just love the sound of a a Brass Band. When visiting our son at Littleborough some time ago we went to Upper Mill where there was a Brass Band Festival...so many bands gathered & played. Great stuff !

First time I've seen a vicar wearing sunglasses.

Lovely photo. I used to love the brass band and the boys' brigade band on Walking Days. It was such a special day back in the fifties and sixties and people lined the pavements to watch. Little children were dressed in their best and people ran into the road to give them a threepenny bit or a sixpence. Forgive me repeating this story but some newer contributors may not have heard it....My Aunty Mary, for some strange reason known to herself, always to put a posh voice on at Walking Day, but she could never get her aiches in the right place, and as the vicar and other dignitaries passed by she would shout, "Oh, 'ello Vicar....hisn't it 'ot?". Then she would spot some high-up Church lady's little lad wearing a silk suit and carrying a crook and she would revert back to her everyday Lancashire and announce scathingly , "Ey-up, ah thowt yon mon ud a't be a shepherd!". Thankyou Dennis, for this photo....it has brought back so many memories. Sorry for rabbiting on!

Priests and vicars are quite trendy these days.
The last priest we had was covered in tattoos!
Lovely Summery photo Dennis even if it does seem like late Autumn. I have just retrieved a woolly ‘bob’ cap from the deep drawer where woolly caps and scarves are kept I am off for a swim!

Great, tell you what I miss, is a Walking day parade. Very rarely seen these days. Maybe the Rev can answer that.

Nice picture Dennis . A brass band is the epitome of the north . Listen to Holst's Suite for Military Band in e flat . Spine tingling .

Live performance of 'Brassed Off' at the Octagon theatre in Bolton was worth the entrance fee. Included Rodrigo's Contierto de Aranjuez (orange juice).. very moving.

Good to see this tradition of the Whit Walks continued although these days they are much smaller.
The Whit Monday Walk in Wigan was huge, stretching for miles with many bands playing, one of my favourites being the Scottish Pipe Bands.
St Mary's, St John's, St Patricks, St Josephs all with their individual Schools and Associations and of course Sacred Heart who had to trek all the way from Springfield to join the parade on the Market Square.
All came to an end in the 1960's.

Poet, on which of Gustav Holt's CD's might I find this?

Comment by: Dek on 9th June 2024 at 13:27

Yes Veronica, very trendy, but why is his curate dressed like a woman?

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 9th June 2024 at 13:37

Colin, just google the title and a little video comes up. An advert comes on before the music, (it was for cat-food when I listened to it!), but it allows you to "skip" the advert after a few seconds and then the music starts.

If it’s a Catholic priest the lady won’t be a curate Dek. The RC’s don’t have women priests. She may be a stalwart of the church though. A great help in various other ways.

The Wigan Whit Walk gave way to The Wigan Pride Parade 10th August.
Put that in you diary Dennis it might be worth a picture. I'd love to see the comments.

Many thanks Poet, found it and just ordered it from Amazon, only one left in stock. Cheers.

Re '' Orange Juice ''
First time we heard that piece of music was when deep down in the earth at Wookey Hole Caves...talk about spine chilling...it actually made me cry it was so beautiful.

Poet and All.
My taste in music is quite eclectic and I love most genres.
My choice for the moment is John Williams 40 Year Of Film Music.
You might not have seen or even like the films over the last fifty years but this composers soundtrack music and is as incredible as it is varied.
I first came across him in Steven Spielberg's film The Reivers with Steve McQueen in 1969, film was just okay but the one of the music tracks hit a chord, I used to have it on vinyl, bought it in Cheltenham in 1970.
I am sure it was plagiarised for Last of The Summer Wine theme. Or it might have been the other way around, nor sure which came first.
Listen to both and make a comparison. It's always bugged me!

Irene, Pet food and no mention of the Fish Stall picture I sent to you yesterday, sorry they had no cucumbers.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 9th June 2024 at 15:53

PS, forgot to mention the theme music to Empire Of The Sun, such a joyous piece in the Baroque Choral Style. Play it at full volume..

Comment by: Poet on 9th June 2024 at 16:44

Colin , my favourite piece of film music is from the Erroll Flynn movie ' The Sea Hawk ' , by Erich Korngold . I have two versions of it ( Gerhardt and Previn ) and love to hear the subtle differences in each . At the moment they are rarely off my player .
William Alwyn's score for the James Mason film ' Odd Man Out ' is incredibly beautiful , but so tragic you just know that 'Johnnie ' is going to
fall in a hail of police bullets at the end .

Hope you enjoy the Holst , please let me know what you think of it .

Colin, you have lost me with your comment at 15.40pm! Cucumbers?? I emailed you yesterday to thank you for the fish stall picture.....did you not receive the email?

My favourite tune from the film “My Foolish Heart” gets me every time I hear it…Margaret Whiting sings it the best…it was used for a modern film a couple or more years ago. I think it was called ‘ Carol’ but not seen it. You can hear it on ytube.

Deck, they are everywhere these trans folk, even church, don’t be surrised if they vote some onto Wigan council.

Comment by: PaulP on 9th June 2024 at 22:35

Just for the record this is not actually a brass band. Neither is it a silver band but a mixture. From the instruments visible in the picture I count 4 brass and 4 silver. The English language does not have a noun to describe such a band, only brass or silver.

Comment by: John Noakes on 13th June 2024 at 21:16

I believe a 'silver' instrument is still a 'brass' instrument but it is silver plated. True or False?
