Is Gidlow Lane the longest lane in Wigan

Don't you think they would have put a picture celebrating our local team on its trip to Wembley and to "wish them well"

Good Luck Lads, Bring the silver home.

I used to pass this pub three times a week when I used to pick my grandchildren up from school and I too wondered why It was called "The Famous Pagefield" Apparently the name is something to do with The Pagefield ironworks which was once nearby. If you google "The Famous Pagefield Wigan" there is a youtube video of someone exploring the inside of it after it was abandoned You don't have to go onto youtube....you can just click on the video on google. It looks quite creepy!

I'm glad such a lovely building is being brought back to use.

'Don't you think they would have put a picture celebrating our local team on its trip to Wembley and to "wish them well"'

Who are 'they'?

It would have looked better in cherry and white.Good luck Wigan.

You’re right Irene it is creepy. Reminds me of the film “ The Shining” with Jack Nicholson.
It’s a shame it must have looked really nice in its heyday.

Ticsmon...who?

Comment by: Cyril on 8th June 2024 at 13:32

They've got a job on there, but as was said much better to be brought back into something useful. The film Irene mentions, if it is the same one I have seen, shows just how much damage the vandals have done throughout the building - every room in fact, and it is horrendous, also water pipes had been ripped out in the upstairs rooms causing a lot of water damage and mould to grow, and I suppose the entire building will be being gutted, there was very nice mahogany woodwork in the bars and rooms too.

I'm sure a landlady some years ago to get more custom began calling it The 'Famous' Pagefield Hotel.

Scot Lane is very long too Roylew.

Wasn't there a well know "Panel" bowling Green here ?

Comment by: Sir Bob on 8th June 2024 at 17:02

That is in my opinion, the most beautiful building in Wigan.

Dennis, good photo, I put a commune this morning but it must have got sucked into another dimension.
I remember those time when it was a meeting place before and after the games at Springfield Park. Good to see it’s being refurbished and brought back to life.

Comment by: Broady on 8th June 2024 at 18:00

Presumably being converted into flats.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 8th June 2024 at 19:48

Meant to say comment not commune but maybe that’s what it will be.
Caroline, yes I am sure there once was a bowling great the back.

Comment by: Ticsmon on 8th June 2024 at 22:00

Ticsmon...who?

...is on first

Comment by: Pru on 8th June 2024 at 23:25

It is being converted into flats. A good idea considering the amount of housing that is needed in Wigan borough.

Comment by: Veronica. on 9th June 2024 at 08:32

It’s coming to summat when we don’t know who’s who!

Comment by: Veronica on 9th June 2024 at 13:29

There’s that many people needing housing it’s a far better idea to convert these old buildings into flats, instead of using green spaces for new buildings. It’s a pity it wasn’t thought of before! Never mind re- cycling plastic - re-cycle buildings. Those bricks are far more superior than new bricks!
