Knew a family called Trickett who lived in Skull house about 50 years ago. And there was a skull there.

Lovely photo of the Wheatsheaf on Miles Lane!

Comment by: Phil Taylor on 27th April 2024 at 07:34

How many people are going to point out that the Wheatsheaf is on Miles Lane not Skull House Lane, and is in Appley Bridge not Shevington.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 27th April 2024 at 08:47

Another good pic Dennis but don't signs plague the World these days ? There 6 that I can see on the frontage of this nice pub . I would go in that pub if they WERE NOT showing Sky Sports !

Comment by: Sue on 27th April 2024 at 08:48

The best place in Wigan, the best pub and the best people, that's Shevington for you.
Look, the place is so clean and tidy. Dennis your an absolute legend.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 27th April 2024 at 09:08

What a lovely scene.... I like the stone of the cottage and the red brick and tall chimneys of the pub, though I doubt "There's an old piano and they play it hot behind the green door" these days!

Comment by: good old days on 27th April 2024 at 09:17

always thought skull house lane was appley bridge

Comment by: T.D. on 27th April 2024 at 09:31

Impressive set of stacks and what goes on behind the green door with access ramp is any one's guess. Very inviting scene Dennis.

The ‘fairytale village’ of Shangri- La in the Province of La-La Land within the jurisdiction of its progressive parish council with full control of the bye laws omitting undesirables including horse and carts and scrap men? Strange that it doesn’t look any different to anywhere else. Where are the pavements gilded with gold? I would definitely say it’s not the best ‘part’ of Wigan by any stretch of the imagination. I quite like the upper regions of Upholland. Good photo though Dennis as usual. You can make anywhere look agreeable. I love the odd stone cottage and the mix of Accrington brick. Did the builders run out of funds?
Ps has Mick changed gender?

Scull house lane in Appley Bridge
WN6.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 27th April 2024 at 09:40

"Sue"?? (sorry, not sure if I've got your name correct).....According to people on here, it's NOT Shevington, it's Appley Bridge. I'm not too familiar with the area but I was always believed Skull House to be in Appley Bridge.

Comment by: Sandra on 27th April 2024 at 09:52

Lovely Dennis, the pub's on Miles Lane in Appley Bridge. But a beautiful photo never the less.

Comment by: Roy on 27th April 2024 at 10:23

Nice photo Dennis of a place i drank in for 20 years (not every day)
But i'm sorry to correct you, as lizzielocket says it is Miles Lane. Skull House Lane starts 100yds behind where you are stood.

Comment by: Ex Speed Cop on 27th April 2024 at 10:50

Oliver Somers son used to live in one of those cottages which are located on Miles Lane Shevington Vale.
Caught him going to fast in his car once.

THE WHEATSHEAF
Address: 287 Miles Ln, Appley Bridge, Wigan WN6 9DQ

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 27th April 2024 at 12:46

I don’t know how I ever get back wom sometimes. What with Standishgate suddenly turning into Wigan Lane and Miles Lane turning into Skull House Lane by means of some invisible line in the same road! I don’t know if am cummin er gooin.
O un while wer at it, why does Abram have a tay pot on its road signs? Cos they don’t grow tay in Abram do they?
An another thing, why did Aspull Council have an Ostrich with a key in it’s gob on it’s badge?
These are the things we should be worrying about.

Seriously though, I blame the Spellchecker, all the world’s problems could be solved if we could only get rid of all Spellcheckers.

DOWN WITH ALL SPELLCHECKERS!

No, Veronica, it was his knee that wasn’t working.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 27th April 2024 at 13:10

Dennis, yet again another excellent photo distracted with nit picking comments attempting to take the edge off by folks with no appreciation of the efforts put in by PAD picture takers.
It's a pity they have nothing better to do. I compliment you.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 27th April 2024 at 13:47

Dennis, it's the same with Bickershaw Lane becoming Smiths Lane at a certain point, and Ladies Lane in Hindley becoming Hall Lane, and Scholes suddenly changing into Whelley! I CAN tell you that road sign as you come into Abram depicts the Abram Morris Dancers' logo, with flowers and ribbons and a silver tay-pot on top! The Abram Morris Dance is still performed every June and the dancers carry the pole with the flowers etc on top as they perform the dance at various spots in the village. So neaw tha knows!
Just an add-on....there was a query on yesterday's p-a-d asking if Garry and Cyril are okay as they've been a bit quiet. Please let us know you're okay, gentlemen, because we're getting a bit worried as it's your round in the pub!

Irene/Colin, I’m just glad that I’m not a Postman. Think of all the adverse comments I would get if I was a Postman.

I lived at 27 Skull house Lane some 60 years ago and spent many happy hours in the Weatshief when Dick was the landlord.

Comment by: Dave on 27th April 2024 at 19:29

Same two sucking the same bitter lemon about Mick , who on his bike , put his nose in everywhere to tell the true Wigan story!
Isn’t that what WW is about ? Or is about my selfish own ?
I loved reading recently about John from Westhoughton and his bike adventures , who took time to share with WW . John’s mention of the word ‘adventure’. took me back to my own enriching experience as child and that carefree existence. Thanks John !
Let’s please give Mick the same credit he deserves for what he has contributed to WW to tell the Wigan story .

One in the room, one in the mirror....that's how they were in the same room. Same person.

A photograph full of character, warm colours in the stone and brick. I'm with you Helen regarding the advert - it's defacing the building. Beautiful photo Dennis, thank you.

Comment by: Cyril on 27th April 2024 at 21:52

There's been some wonderful photos this week by Dennis and Colin, you've been out and about far and wide too, great stuff, though a pity that the goofballs with their snide comments are still evident.

Irene, I've been looking through the photos posted this past week as I'd not been looking in, and your comment the other day about the pub name 'Hark to Towser' got me laughing, because the name Towser had come to my mind a few days ago and I'd been wondering where I'd heard it before, after thinking I remembered that it was the name of the family dog of Pop, Dick and Harry in The Beezer, so maybe like me and many others you were a Beezer reader, though Towser is also the name of other dogs in children's books and TV cartoons and also the film 101 Dalmatians, from where you may have seen or heard the name.

Your comments on the photos that remind you of places you have worked or have been to are always good to read, so keep posting and using acronyms if needs be - and disregard the fatuous remarks.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 27th April 2024 at 22:30

Dave, I know you mean me, but no-one would have ever said anything about Mick in the first place if he were like John from Westhoughton who also goes about on his bike and takes interesting pictures of Wigan to share with us all. John DOESN'T make out that where he lives is better than where the rest of us live, and he doesn't knock other people's photos, but comments politely on them, and what's more he only uses one name instead of hiding behind a number of aliases to make bragging comments about the Utopia where he lives, making out that the rest of us live in pig-sties. And there, Dave, lies the difference. Mick or "Anne" or "Silvia from Bognor Regis" or one of his other many aliases is probably laughing now, hoping I would retaliate and put myself in the wrong in front of everyone on Wigan World....well if I have done so, I have done so, but at least I have done it under my own name. You have put your point forward, Dave, and I have put mine. This is not against you.

Comment by: Veronica on 27th April 2024 at 23:15

So tedious and childish reading how Shevvy is the ‘best’ as in people, place, pub etc. There’s good people everywhere living in towns and going about their business. It’s schoolyard stuff whoever it is who’s boasting and PAD carries on it’s not a one man band on here. Never has been as far as I can see.

Comment by: John Fazakerley on 28th April 2024 at 07:59

I can only see one person on here who is always trying to cause bother.

Comment by: Tom on 28th April 2024 at 09:56

Glad your still active, Cyril it's just Garry and Mick who have gone missing.

Comment by: Cyril on 28th April 2024 at 21:09

Tom, Garry may also have got fed up with the multi-name poster who's been getting folks backs up, it may well be the same poster from the Boards as someone on there was doing the same, and folks were leaving because of the bother being caused.
In his last post a few weeks back Mick said he was recovering from knee surgery, previously he'd said he was getting about on a disabled scooter, and I'd imagine the kids around Shevy would be all excited thinking it was Eddie Dawson off Benidorm going around on Madge's scooter.

Thanks everyone, for your kind thoughts, I've just not been in the mood lately.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th April 2024 at 14:26

Cheer up Garry hopefully the weather is going to get a bit warmer this week. There’s nothing like cold and rain to dampen the spirits. We should resurrect our enthusiasm soon.
