Spring As Sprung
It’s good to see though.
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-HX99)
Good photo as always Dennis, they only appear to be cleaning up one spot though. Dennis excuse this sidebar to Colin Traynor "thanks for your welcome, I'm living in BC close to Vancouver very picturesque and better weather"
A scene many of us walk or drive past regularly but never stop to really see and think about.
I hope they don't clean up those beautiful Crocuses yet, they stand so proud. A reminder that Spring has come early this year,
something I'm not complaining about. Cheers Dennis.
I have always liked these figures. I used to see them three times a week when I went to Wigan to pick my grandchildren up from school throughout the different seasons of the year, and it felt it would be forever....now I rarely go to Wigan but it's nice to see those figures are still there amongst all the chaos of demolition around them, and the crocuses are a happy sign of Spring.
These two statues have been here a few years and have stood the test of time. When ever I get into Wigan I park up just behind them and always have a look at them
I’ve never been up close to the figures. The old woman has a look of Ol’ Mother Riley. It’s nice to see they haven’t been vandalised. Surprised birds haven’t tried nesting on her head, that would have made a nice hat for her!
A welcoming sign of Spring, it's a feel good photo, thanks very much Dennis.
Whoever sculpted those figures did a brilliant job..I mean just look at the stance on the little boy, it couldn’t be bettered… thank you Dennis.
Thanks for posting Dennis, it's always good to see the Crocus, they always put on a good show, and the Daffodils are flowering early too with this unusual warm spell.
Dennis, You posted this picture or one very similar 24th February 2023. It's still very nice though.
Dennis, sorry to interrupt on your excellent photo. Just quick message to Derrek Platt, I see the weather today in Vancouver is similar to here today. Also I recently watch a incredible program on Sky called 'Islands'. it was about the origin of Vancouver island dating back to it creation 200 thousand years ago farther out in the Pacific and what the island is like today. Absolutely incredibly beautiful despite much deforestation..
Where in Wigan is this? The handsome bay-windowed house in the background looks like the Bridgeman Terrace area but I haven't lived in Wigan for years so I can't really place it any better than that.
Michael Gormally.....the spot where the figures are has probably changed since you were last in Wigan. You go up Mesnes Street and turn LEFT at the TOP of Mesnes Street ......the figures are then on your RIGHT. Then, if you turn first right just after you've passed them, you are in Bridgeman Terrace.....funnily enough we went that way in the car today not long after I commented on the photo and it seemed odd seeing "photo-a-day" through the car window. If someone can explain that more clearly to Michael, please do....I'm not the world's best at directions and would get anybody lost!! Lo! xxxx
That’s why I said that they had only just finished from last year Colin.
‘and it felt it would be forever’ I R
A pearl in a shell ..
Thank you, Mrs Roberts. With your help I've managed to visualise the location.
Searching for those statues on Google Maps I looked at that row of historic Georgian houses on Dicconson Street and Upper Dicconson Street. They are in a disgracefully dilapidated state. The devastation of the Market Square area defies description. What in God's name is Wigan Council doing to allow the town to fall into this state of disrepair and decay? I am horrified.
They have been there for few years now, and when they were first put in, I thought that they would not last past the first weekend, before they lost an head or an arm, so I am impressed that they have stood the test of time.
Welcome to the future of Wigan town centre Michael, there's only Wigan Mick who has any faith in what the council are doing, their motto is 'Believe', so we are beginning to think that what they actually believe in is the fairy godmother who'll eventually wave her wand and make everything alright.
Thanks Dennis, now I understand, both are wonderful and much appreciated.
Michael G, Wigan as a town is going through what might be termed a period of revolutionary change. If this is for the better, only time will tell. Bolton is experiencing the same!
Dennis, great minds think alike. Every time I pass these two, I say to myself I will photograph them one day, but while I'm thinking about it, you've done it.Good photo thank you.
