The House Next Door to the House Next Door!

The House Next Door to the House Next Door!
The house next door to Kensington House is Malvern House now inter connected.
Apparently a family by the name of Sawbridge who were Butchers lived in Kensington House.
A family by the name of Hough who were Boiler Makers in Newtown lived in Malvern House.

Good photo Colin of magnificent homes. I'm not familiar with them. Could they be on Ormskirk Road.

I know a picture of Kensington House was first on PAD 26th January but further information came to light.
Sawbridge Butchers the family that lived here have advertisement on History World - Advert Museum dated 1907, stating at that time they had been Established Over 48 Years.
William Sawbridge Wholesale and Retail Beef & Perk Butchers, 16 Market Street Wigan. Sausages and Brawn Fresh Daily. Pickled Tongues constantly on Hand. Home Cured... Bacon & Hams.
I do believe they eventually sold out to Mark Williams Butchers but do not know when.
Malvern House was the home of the Hough Family who I understand had a Heating and Boiler business in Newtown but I could not find out anything further.
As you can see both houses are now interconnected to form the Health Education Centre with a new Library designed by FWP Architects at the back and a Lecture theatre at the back of Malvern House.

The front door to Malvern House, now only used as a fire door not accessible from the outside, also has some lovely stained glass windows to the side and above, not clearly visable from the outside.
These depict stylised intertwining red roses with green leaves and are quite beautiful with the daylight behind.

Derek, they do look a little like some on Ormskirk Road but these are on Wigan Lane just lower down from the infirmary.

Derek Platt, the houses are on Wigan Lane next to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. My husband worked for Sawbridge's butchers in the mid-late 1960s when he was a young lad. If it's the same family of Sawbridges, the proprietor was by then JIM Sawbridge and he lived in St. Anne's. Peter started work for them in 1966 in their shop in Wallgate, (I know p-a-d's Maureen used to be sent to the shop for her Mother's meat order). By the time I met Peter in 1968, ( when we were just 15 and 17 years old respectively), the shop in Wallgate had come under a demolition order and the butcher's shop had moved to Commercial Yard in Wigan. Peter left for a different job in 1970 and Sawbridge's was still operating; I imagine Commercial Yard was demolished around 1971 at the same time as The Old Arcade but can't be sure.

Please note that "Anagram Man" who posts under "Ernie Strebor", (an anagram of my name), has now got a new persona. As well as Ernie and Ronnie Kerr, (which is meant to sound like Veronica), he has also got a NEW name! So, fellow p-a-d people, please welcome Rev. O'Cian, (an anagram of Veronica), who has added comments on yesterday's p-a-d and the day before. Should Veronica and I be flattered by these anagrams or does he think we are just too thick to work them out? Does he get changed in a telephone box and emerge wearing a cape with "Anagram Man" emblazoned on it? What on earth he's playing at is beyond me but it's a pity he's nothing better to do with his life. What a sad, pathetic individual!

Irene/ Veronica, if true this is disgraceful behaviour and should be routed out and stopped. It brings the whole site into disrepute.

Comment by: Maureen on 19th February 2024 at 11:36

Irene,do your best to ignore him..he just wants attention..re Sawbridges, yes my mam would send me for a leg of lamb..she always put some on my plate and my Dad would say "you know she won't eat it" I have always had an aversion to meat of any kind..mind you I looked forward to going to Sawbridges ..Billy was a very handsome chap. LoL

Does anyone remember tricky Mickey having a go at me..all because he was turned down by a girl from Wallgate,he just couldn't cope with it so of course each time he saw my name, that would be it..the starting point for him...they're pathetic.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the ‘expert’ on the other site when searching and pinching photos from here! But whoever it is clamours for the attention so this is my last word on the thief of Bagdad and his antics.

I agree, Veronica, and will ignore him now but I just wanted to bring what he is doing to the attention of the regulars on here as they may not have realised that the names he is hiding behind are yours and mine. I've no idea what we've done to warrant his attention! I love p-a-d and look forward to seeing the pictures each day, so it's back in the phone-box with him now and I will just add my thoughts on each day's photo and the memories that the photos tend to bring back to me, as I have always done.

Thank you Irene and Colin for the clarification on the location of these premises. I've been in Canada too long, the memory fades over time.

Comment by: Garry on 19th February 2024 at 16:54

I'm still about Colin.
Don't know nothing about "next door house".
Just have another sherry before tea, cheers.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 19th February 2024 at 18:11

Oh, Garry, I could just go a sherry! Enjoy it!

Comment by: Veronica on 19th February 2024 at 18:16

That’s a good description Pw.
”Creepy Stalking Weirdos”. I will remember that….

Derek, lovely to hear from you in Canada. I have friends in Toronto and Nova Scotia, very jealous not to live there, apart from the very cold winters that is!
Many happy times when I used to visit.

Comment by: Garry on 19th February 2024 at 21:54

I'll drink to that Irene , I hope you feel much better x
