Do you hear, do you hear the thunder

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 5th February 2024 at 07:30

I do hope WMC appreciate WW photographers for keeping a record of the expensive demolishion of a town centre.

Comment by: Gordon Ion on 5th February 2024 at 08:20

Yes I'm in Australia. Where on earth can this be??

Comment by: Wiganer on 5th February 2024 at 09:36

Gordon lon obviously you've not bin on PaD lately, it's a demolition site in Wigan that's on almost everyday. The Galleries shopping centre.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 5th February 2024 at 09:37

What was I thinking about....must have drop my toast butter side down.
Demolition...hope I have it right this time, no doubt someone will tell me if I haven't !?

Comment by: Veronica on 5th February 2024 at 09:48

I’d like to shout a message to my friend Pat in Perth….I hope the heat isn’t getting you downnnnn get plenty sun cream onnnnn .. get your ear plugs innnnnn echoooo echooo

Comment by: Cyril on 5th February 2024 at 10:01

Interesting photo Dennis, strangely with those diggers down there in the basement it now doesn't seem to be as deep as I remembered it to be, particularly as whenever articulated lorries loaded with deliveries for Morrisons etc., went down the ramp into the basement off Market Street, they always seemed to be swallowed up in the vastness down there.

Unless the diggers are on the piles of bricks, concrete and other debris that would have fallen into there during the demolition.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 5th February 2024 at 10:17

Gordon Ion, I understand that when completed will be able to take a short cut to Brisbane by jumping into the hole. It will be Wigan Council's contribution to cut down International Air Travel.
Just think we will be able to pop down to watch Brisbane Bronco's and be back before the pubs close.

Comment by: Cyril on 5th February 2024 at 12:35

I've had to go back and re-read it Helen, as initially I hadn't noticed how it was spelled and had just read it as is, interesting how the mind reads written words even if there are letters missing or misspellings.
Google says the word for this is -
Typoglycemia - and
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm.

Veronica, ask Pat if he/she knows Geedubya from Tittibong.
I haven’t seen him since he was lost on the Great Chicken drive over the Pennine Range.

Please come back Mick

PS just found a video of Mick riding around the underground unloading bay.

Comment by: Honestly on 5th February 2024 at 13:28

Yes come back Mick all is forgiven.

Comment by: Veronica on 5th February 2024 at 13:39

I’ll make enquiries Dtease. I think Mick’s entered that hole and he can’t find his way out!
He’s probably down under by now. He might let on GDub in his wanderings.

Comment by: Sir Bob on 5th February 2024 at 13:50

From what I can see now, the ground floor of the Galleries over the underground service area is now being demolished, so when they have finished the demolition, there will be just a big hole left there.

Mick's video of the underground service area.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 5th February 2024 at 15:25

Sir Bob, many thanks for the link and to Mick on his bike for the video, absolutely incredible, I never in a million years would have realised how vast and extensive that cavernous underground area was, compelling viewing. I'm Totally Gob Smacked!!!!

Comment by: Veronica on 5th February 2024 at 16:16

They might find an old burial site down there…I wouldn't be surprised.

Comment by: Sir Bob on 5th February 2024 at 17:16

Veronica

"{{They might find an old burial site down there…I wouldn't be surprised}}"

I think they would have found any burial sites in the early 1980s, when they first dug the foundations out for The Galleries.

Comment by: Dave on 5th February 2024 at 18:46

Colin , many want to judge Mick but he puts his nose in everywhere and shares it . I have huge respect for this guy because he shows me Wigan’s changing story on his bike and goes where not all want to go and see . I want to see beyond Standish, and Aspull , Mick takes me there ! On his bike , yes ! Which I find a joy !
Wigan for me is changing now beyond my recollection ! Places I was so familiar with are no longer so . I now need markers to
see the place I was born !
People like Mick help me with this
Each to their own ,

Comment by: Veronica on 5th February 2024 at 18:58

Yes you’re right Sir Bob, I looked at the ytube video it’s massive I wouldn’t have known about it if I hadn’t watched it. It was very good I felt I was on top of his shoulders!!! I expected I would falloff any minute..;o))

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 5th February 2024 at 20:04

Dave, I could not agree more.
As you will have seen I am relatives to WW but have come to very much appreciate Mick’s contributions over the years. Hope he gets up and posting again.

Comment by: Dick Dastardly on 5th February 2024 at 21:42

Yes Mick is super isn't he . So many genuine adoring fans like Honestly for example . Although some may think perhaps it's just a little ill mannered to rave about this marvel on someone else's photo a day , I'm sure Dennis wont mind . Great men must be praised afterall .

Comment by: Dave on 5th February 2024 at 21:55

Colin , as I have said before , I find your posts and spirit an absolute joy , simply because you see the middle , embrace the same both and each with same and warming value ! That to me speaks hugely ! Mine is the conflict , our walls of self !

Comment by: Veronica on 5th February 2024 at 22:40

DD you’re right it is ill mannered. It happens a lot and not just with Dennis’s photos either.
Dave have you been at Garry’s Sherry or are you studying Philosophy?

Comment by: DTease on 5th February 2024 at 23:22

Who mentioned Mick? What has Mick got to do with this photo?
If you want a photo of a lump of concrete and a dandelion (something Mick once posted) then you can put your own photo on can’t you? Or if you only want to whine and moan about other peoples comments then there are other sites on here where you can do that alongside other like minded people.
I addressed my comment to Veronica because she knows what I am talking about, if you don’t like my comment then don’t read it! It matters not to me one way or the other.
There are plenty of comments on here that I don’t necessarily agree with but I don’t come on here moaning about it. People have different ideas about things and long may they do so.

Comment by: Gordon Ion on 6th February 2024 at 07:49

I have seen the devastation of the town centre but I couldn't place the location from this perspective. I can now see the edge of Rushtons warehouse and the adjoining grey building which I commented on quite recently

Comment by: Dick Dastardly on 6th February 2024 at 08:03

DTease , I don't mind in the least comments going off at a tangent . My gripe is this phony self promotion by an individual who constantly hijacks other people's photos , often to denigrate them and imply how great his own were .
If these comments came from genuine admirers the most natural thing in the world would be to come back with a few words of gratitude.
But nay , never a peep . It seems thanking himself for extolling himself is just one step beyond .

Comment by: DTease on 6th February 2024 at 08:49

I see your point DD. He seems to have created his own self appointed Publicity Machine with the sole task of promoting the greater glory of himself and his videos.

Comment by: James Hanson on 6th February 2024 at 14:10

Nowt wrong with Mick and his videos they'll go down in the history of Wigan.

Comment by: DTease on 6th February 2024 at 15:07

If they are so wonderful James, how come he has to peddle them on here to get viewers?
This is a site for photographs, the clue is in the name “Picture-a-Day”. Videos go on Youtube.

Comment by: John G on 6th February 2024 at 18:21

DTease It was me who mentioned that Mick had made a video of the underground area of the market and then it was Sir Bob who showed the link.

Comment by: Veronica on 7th February 2024 at 12:59

Yeah but…who’s the missing link ..? Honestly…..

Comment by: Sir Bob on 11th February 2024 at 18:47

It is 'official' now, the Chinese BCEGI have pulled out of the project, they won't be moving forward with it on from the demolition, and no other contractor has been appointed to start construction work, just another demolition company has been appointed to finish off the demolition.
