Two Pigeons, One Gonk

Two Pigeons, One Gonk
I walked down Frog Lane today and try as I might I could not find a Partridge in 'The Pear Tree'.
Hope this will suffice?

Pigeons again....oh no.

Flying rats everywhere, the protective niddles needs to be higher on the window ledge to keep nests and droppings away.
And more importantly away from people.

Sorry, but you cannot take a photo anywhere in the town centre without pidgins, a cull is long overdue.
I had hoped to catch a few ‘Lords A Leaping’ but I think they were inside ‘A Drinking’.

Vermin filthy birds.
I love Nature but not these.

I have seen drunks, fights, begging, vomit, spit and people off their heads on drugs in the Market Place, (usually accompanied by foul language), from so-called "human beings", who are well aware of the upset they are causing, including intimidation to decent people just going about their shopping. But let there be a photo of a pigeon and you'd think the Martians had landed!

Unusual shot Colin, you don't half find them :) btw, is the Pear Tree still shut ? I heard a few weeks ago that it had shut so suddenly, the darts & dominoes men were given no warning !!

Comment by: Maureen on 4th February 2024 at 11:36

Exactly Irene, the hatred for them must surely stem from a fear of them.. I love them and cannot understand anyone hating them so much..I’ve said it before..there’s nothing nastier than the human species.

Spot on Irene, I think it’s more than pigeons that need culling!
WN1, at the time I was sat in Wetherspoon’s taking a light refreshment, all in the course of research you understand!
Not sure about the Pear Tree though, will check it and get back to you.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 4th February 2024 at 12:05

WN1, you could be right about the Old Pear Tree, I just put in a call but ‘it was not possible to connect my call’. Sounds like it has bee cut off!
Pity this is reputed to be the oldest pub in Wigan 1817. I think it Grade 2 listed and supposedly refurbished last year.
If indeed closed, Perhaps it will reopen as a kebab House!

Will no one Coo Up on our behalf, we are homeless now with all that pokey wire and boarded up windows. Wigan Council gave us a home in the Market Place with a Food Bank, I think humans call it a Pound Bakery.

A Gonk, by gum that's going back a bit.

Comment by: Jack Jaw on 4th February 2024 at 14:21

Colin go to the Parks and you'll find proper birds we all love.

Comment by: Garry on 4th February 2024 at 14:25

What ever people think of Pigeons
They are here to stay. Remember, its not just Wigan who have them.

Comment by: Arthur on 4th February 2024 at 16:03

Daffodils and Crocuses will soon be out, and all other Spring flowers we all love to see. The parks and nature reserves are full of them.
Thanks for the Photo, Colin.

Unusual shot is it to represent the pub or the Pigeons. What ever it is, I like both of them.
Thank you Colin.

I think I was a pidgeon in a previous life.

Comment by: Gill on 4th February 2024 at 20:29

Although they raid my garden of bird food and are always on on the lookout on neighbours' chimneys I don't mind pigeons, they're all part of nature. They are quite intelligent, mate for life, have great hearing, sight, flight and navigational abilities, plus they helped us in WW2 of course. If they were smaller maybe people would take to them better. Some have beautifully coloured feathers like iridescence pinks and greens. I must also add that they like to keep themselves clean, plus I understand the likelihood of disease transmission is actually very small. Dogs are just as likely or not to transmit disease, and some even eat it yuk. Pigeons' faeces aren't great though! If we could just get them to go in one spot...

Comment by: Cyril on 4th February 2024 at 20:55

Those two Pigeons are very intrigued in what you are doing Colin, it goes to show just how intelligent they really are, and their eyesight is far more advanced than ours ever will be too, and they never fail to amaze as to how far away they can be when spotting food being put down; or food being accidently dropped onto the floor. They appear to be cock and hen so will soon begin gathering sticks etc., for their nesting site.
I don't think a cull is necessary as with looking at the recent photos of the town centre there isn't many Pigeons to be seen, and it looks to be quite bereft of other bird life too, compared to years ago when plenty of Sparrows were around as too were Starlings and also the odd Blackbirds.

Are the upstairs rooms of these bars being used by them?
When Wiend Books and Collectables occupied all the top floors along there it was superb, and like a maze when going through a lot of uneven corridors and rickety stairs, all leading to so many rooms you couldn't have believed to have been up there.

Well said, Gill. Having said what I said earlier regarding vomit and spit on Market Place, I wish we could get the people who leave THAT on the street to "go in one spot" too.....and, unlike pigeons, they are perfectly capable of depositing it in a toilet; they just don't care where they deposit it. When I see that, along with disgusting behaviour and language, on the "Wetherspoons" side of Market Place, and the pigeons on the "Pound Bakery" side, hoping for a few crumbs from someone's pasty, give me the pigeons anytime. With cigarette butts, food wrappings, chewing-gum etc. dropped willy-nilly all over the place when litter-bins are provided, it is PEOPLE. not pigeons, who are the cause of the filth on our streets.

Me and my hubby used to buy a pasty then go and sit on the benches nearby, feed the pigeons and any other little birds that came along, there was notices everywhere telling of the fines imposed if caught feeding them, I couldn’t give two hoots about the so called fine.
Some years ago I had been working in a supermarket.in Blackburn after work I would go down the mall, get pigeon food go outside to feed them..one day a Pakistani gent came towards me with a big box of chocolates and said “ Fpr you Allah loves people who look after pigeons “ so you see everyone.. get feeding those pigeons, you never know.

Comment by: Maureen on 5th February 2024 at 10:28

I should have said..a pasty each.

It's wrong to feed wild life food that made for human consumption.
