Wilfrid's.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 20th July 2023 at 01:11

Just pointing out, it's St Wilfrid's, Standish, not St Wilfred's.

Cathedral Glass beautiful art and very skilled people who design, make and assembled it together.
Real beauty for all to see.
Cheers Dennis.

Wilfred’s?
As is traditional now, I’m blaming the Spellchecker.
Should be Wilfrid’s.

Comment by: Linma on 20th July 2023 at 06:36

Dennis It’s St Wilfrid’s.

Comment by: DavidH on 20th July 2023 at 08:18

Nice photos Dennis but it’s St Wilfrid’s not St Wilfred’s.

Comment by: T on 20th July 2023 at 08:25

Saw on a social media site that sadly there had been a burglary a day or 2 ago so will now be closed between services. A great shame

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 20th July 2023 at 09:05

Yes, it is St. Wilfrid's in the case of Standish's church but the name is more often spelt "Wilfred" as in Wilfred Pickles, (if anyone remembers him!). The stained glass is beautiful.

O Spellchecker! What-a mistake-a to make-a. You know you’ve hit rock bottom when even Mick de Wigan is pulling you up about spelling mistakes. Go and stand in the corner and hang your head in shame…. and take Dennis with you!

Comment by: Edna on 20th July 2023 at 09:13

Very nice photo Dennis, as always.

Beautiful stained glass windows it would be very expensive to install replicas of those windows these days. I doubt very much newly built churches could afford them.
I wonder if ‘Wilfrid’ was misspelt in the beginning. It sounds very ‘Wiggin-speyk’

Comment by: Roy on 20th July 2023 at 10:05

I think you know now Dennis that it is St Wilfrid's , lol.
Wilfred is a male Christian name, Wilfrid is the Saints name.
As T says there was a burglary at the church yesterday, scum of the earth, how low can some folk go.

Comment by: Brian on 20th July 2023 at 10:21

Saint Wilfid was a English bishop c633- 709

Comment by: Veronica on 20th July 2023 at 10:26

I’m reminded of that old song…
Hang down your ‘ead Tom Dooley. Hang down yer ‘ead and cry….
Hang down yer ‘ead Tom Dooley
Poor boy yer gonna
dieeeeeee.
Was it Lonnie Donnegan who sang that… giving my age away here…

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 20th July 2023 at 11:15

I think I’ve got the message now Roy.
I’ll wear an hair shirt for a month by way of a penance. (I still think it was the spellchecker though).

Comment by: Veronica on 20th July 2023 at 12:30

I believe you Dennis it drives me mad the spell check..it’s worse than Mick’s spelling.
Imagine what Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the problems that will bring. I believe it’s similar to the way Spell Check operates from what I can gather…anyway him who does the spell check has died and it’s his Funfair next Friday. That’s what I keep being told but the spell check keeps occurring!!!

Comment by: Cyril on 20th July 2023 at 14:35

As stated there is Wilfrid, which spell checkers do flag up and as Dennis quite rightly said with spelling it Wilfred, and there's Wilfried, Wifred and Wifredo, and according to the interweb they're all derived from Wlfried which is from the German Wille and Frieden, in English Will and Peace. So take your pick everyone will know what you mean, but some will only be too happy to indicate you're wrong.

There always has been thieving from churches, even when Wilfrid was a lad, thieves see them like they see charity shops as being easy targets.

Irene I seem to remember Wilfred Pickels’s wife being Mable (give him the money Mabel)
Veronica Tom was innocent and his last name was Dula but changed to Dooley in the song and pretty sure Lonnie sang it. I was in a skiffle group at school and sang that song and thinking the line was For boy you’re gonna die great memories haha and also great photo Dennis .(not being picky Veronica ????)

Comment by: Veronica on 20th July 2023 at 17:00

I am absolutely sure you are right John…it just came into my head.
It’s a long,long,long time ago.

Comment by: Gary on 20th July 2023 at 17:30

Wilfred Pickles, Have A Go, Mabel at the table, with Violet Carson (later Ena Sharples - Coronation Street) playing the piano.
Allegedly the good old days - Wilfred was not a popular sort in the BBC. He was regarded as mean, naming a price for everything he did.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 20th July 2023 at 19:28

Wilfred Pickles played Hayley Mills' uncle in The Family Way and I always liked him until I read something about him in his biography which put me off him! I won't say what it was.

Comment by: Vernacular on 20th July 2023 at 21:57

What's in a name? We all knew where he meant.

Comment by: Linma on 21st July 2023 at 08:38
