That’s a good one, at first glance I thought it was an old photo. Apart from the signs it really could be a step back in time….

I've never seen this before, although I don't go through Standish very often...took me a while to get my bearings and I am still a bit lost!.....Is that Preston Road going off to the left, please? Copper Vines looks a very nice establishment.....very cosy! Hope it does well.

Irene , The corner of Market St (left ) and Pole St. ( right) . The parish church to my back .
If you walk to the left of the building you will come to the crossroads where Preston Road goes right , School Lane goes straight ahead and you turn left for the High St and Wigan Road .

Got it Poet, and many thanks. I was in the wrong place but got my bearings now thanks to your clear directions, and I have to agree with Veronica about the "antiquated" look of the photo. It's lovely.

You've taken some good shots of Standish Poet and this is another cracker. It shows how things have changed and yet, retain the same being. They did a good job converting the premises and it seems to be doing well Irene. Speaking of change have you seen the new Rectory Wood estate going up just past the Owls on the opposite side, before the railway bridge ? I thought Standish was nearly full. Having said that, I never thought I'd see the day Grove Lane ended at the Mill Pond, and not at the back of Birkett's old shop.

The café used to be Tom Walsh's draper's and men's outfitters years ago, and Kaz's kitchen was then a ladies' hairdresser's. I've forgotten her name but possibly Nora Preston?

They've done a great job of doing this up, looks far nicer than it's previous incarnation as a sunbed shop. Although it is a bit fancy and upmarket for me, I'm more for a pub lunch and a pint than the fancy 'deconstructed' dishes that they serve here

No, I hadn't seen the new estate, Standisher. We very rarely go through Standish and tend to be on our way to the Parbold area in the car, so go round by Almond Brook Road, or else we have a ride to Chorley Market by bus, which goes along Preston Road. I remember delivering medication round the Grove Lane area when I worked in the chemists....if we were short of the tablets to fulfill the prescription I would be sent out with the remainder when we got them in! No wonder I was slim! I remember Heaton Street, Bessies Well Place, Taberner Close and Larkhill Place/Avenue? I was only 18-20 so it was around 50 years ago. I can even remember some of our customers but I can't remember where Grove Lane ended!

I tend to make my way round the corner, towards the Lychgate.

Never been in that building for around 70 years, as John says it was Tom Walsh's men's outfitters in the 40's, 50's and early 60's. I lived directly across Market St from it, in what is now Garlands Flower shop from 1941 till 1965 from birth until when i got married.

We go to Kaz's every time we are passing through Standish, they do great food & reasonably priced.
