Walked up-and-down there quite a few hundred times going to college, swimming baths, library and a number of other places.
Seems to look steeper and longer on the photograph.

No reflection on your photo Dennis but the song....Boxes, pretty boxes....all made out of ticky tacky & all look just the same....good image of angles.

Again the contrast between the old and the new. At least the old police station has been brightened up and repurposed. Not many pedestrians about just one person hidden by a tree

Dennis, Maybe I should have said straight lines rather than angles.

I have a book, "A Wigan Childhood" by John Sharrock Taylor, who was brought up at 62, Millgate in the 1950s. He made a "trolley" from wood and old pram-wheels and says "I mounted my trusty steed, and pushed off along the pavement down Millgate and veered right into Hewlett Street". Looking at the photo, I can just imagine that little lad careering along those flags on the right. The building he whizzed past would have looked much the same as it does now, but I wonder what he would think of the view in front of his trolley today? It looks more like Legoland than Wigan!

Looks much steeper than it actually is .
Dennis , the photo reminds me of the Monty Python sketch , ' Climbing the north face of the Uxbridge Road ' .

I remember when the health dept was on the right. Chest clinic was on the third floor and no bloody lift, second floor landing was like a skating rink with phlegm!

I bet John had a bumpy ride Irene over the cobbles on his home made trolley. But I bet that was fun - if he was to do that today he would be ‘filleted’. I get that feeling just crossing the roads in Wigan these days it does seem dicey . I had the fright of my life the other day crossing at the bottom of Standisgate a car driver did a ‘u’ turn just as I was crossing towards Iceland.

I wonder what's happening with Pennington's, looks like there is scaffolding up.Does anyone know?

Comment by: Ron Hunt on 8th March 2023 at 12:27

Had scaffolding up for years Ever since the Grand Arcade was built. Someone had an idea to turn it into some sort of Night club I think??

When we were lads we were always knocking up trolleys. One lad made one out the biggest pram wheels like those off Silver Cross prams, which could get a fair old speed up.He came down a brew similar to this did right angle turn and the back wheels just buckled sending him and his mate flying off.Except for a few minor cuts both were ok.

If Dennis was to turn 45 degrees to the right where he is stood.
Tom Walleys pet shop was in that very spot. (The road was cobbles then).
