Under Higher Lane
Fond memories of childhood days walking down the old 'Mineral Line' from Aspull to New Springs and beyond. This was part of the line that ran from Crawford Pits along what are now the rear gardens of the odd numbers on Crawford Avenue. At the far end the line went under Haigh Road bridge just where the Co-op shop now stands, as kids in the 1950s we played under that bridge. The line went on to service number 5 pit on Scot Lane and many more including links to Blackrod pits and the pumping pit behind Landlords Farm on Dicconson Lane. Dennis will remember our childhood days walking these lines, finding all sorts of relics from the time the mines around Aspull and Haigh were active.
Haighers still say you can hear the sounds of steam trains coming under the bridge on misty nights
Walt as you reside in Yorkshire, did you know that Quarmby in Yorkshire was once called Haigh, and it also became a popular West Riding surname, see website in link and scroll down to Haigh.
