Photo-a-Day (Wednesday, 25th January, 2023)
Market Place
From the angle of the photo it does not look pedestrian friendly? It looks like the butchers sign is obstructing the footpath same with the free standing coffee sign. Probably no need for either as there is no where to park so they are reliant on pedestrians not passing vehicles.
Someone was telling me about that butcher’s shop only recently . Would that person have been you Mick ?
They reckon it’s pretty good , although it would need to be to whack England’s at Pem .
Although they do appear to have a genuine Silver Cross veg cart parked at the front … Now that is impressive .
I may even give it a try when I’ve exhausted my copious supply of roadkill .
its all about who owns the land at the frontage
Peter, it isn't as bad as it looks, there are no obstructions re the footpath, all the land in front of the building up to the footpath is owned by the owner of the building. From 1941 when i was born until 1965 when i married i lived directly across the road the road from where Mick has taken the pic, then, there were 4 terraced cottages on that land with front gardens and the boundary of the gardens was the pavement, consequently when they were sold and demolished the purchaser retained the area of land which included the front gardens. There is parking to the rear and across the road on the Market Place plus in Pole Street which is behind where Mick is stood.
Read a planning application on the post a few months back. They were wanting to expand and have a resteraunt / cafe area I believe
You wouldnt get away with blocking the pavement like that here. The council allows a certain area of the pavement for the use of shopkeepers & cafes & woe betide you if you step over the invisable line
Roy is correct in what he typed above.
The photograph is slightly deceptive regarding the pavement area as there is more space than one first believes.
Also, there are quite a lot of parking areas in Standish. Across the road, close to the church, there is a parking area for a number of cars. Behind where Mick was standing to take the photograph, there are a small number of spaces for cars and further up the street there is a small car park. Also, as Roy stated, there is a parking area behind the buildings to the left of the photograph.
Additionally, I believe, these parking areas are free, but there are time limits.
Although, you need to know Standish to easily find some of these parking areas and, sometimes, you might have to check a few of the areas to get a parking place.
Ozy Ive only had pies from the McRobbs shop in Standish and the one in Chorley, the pies are very good but they cost a bit more because they use quality fillings, they even do a Wigan Lobbie pie, one of which made it onto Wiganworlds PAD on Sunday, 1st August, 2021 https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/photoaday.php?photo=2021-08-01
Hi Roy , can I ask you and others , what is the situation in Standish as regards new developments and housing expansion ? Are you losing your green spaces or do they have a protected status written in ? I haven’t lived in Wigan or been back for forty years so go off information like WW . Standish was a posh area in my time but I can imagine more and more people will want to live there now . My own childhood green spaces in Wigan are long gone . Just wondering if you or others on here can give an insight whether or not you are battling the developers or not . Best wishes .
Best pies for my money Mick are those from the Rolling Pin at the Saddle junction , but they’re not cheap either .
Are there any cheap pies anywhere today. A good pie not much change out of at least £2 each
