New Football pitches
Correct name is now Laithwaite Park, its got three floodlit pitches a new pavilion with six team and two officials' changing rooms, café and community space and car parking. local teams Cherrybrook FC and Wigan Athletic Ladies and Girls FC will make this site their home as Partner Clubs.
Just a note back to comments on yesterdays PAD.
I suppose we would all do well to read a comment made by Janice on Guestbook, 10th Jan 2023.
not new name , been Laithwaite for many many years and them fields always been there cos ground unsafe due to mining but some quick buck builders would risk building houses ,footballers and rugbyballers from local pubs and clubs also played on there for many years as did old St Marks school A rumour was that it all belonged to labour club and saint Edwards but they both closed and was knocked down other year , so someones bought land
Georgie kicked a tin can ,
or shape his feet could test
Then he packed a stadium ,
His name we knew was Best .
One day upon this pitch here ,
A boy or girl like him ,
Will be lauded from the rooftops
And we’ll praise their birth therein ..
One day within the traffic
I saw a ghostly shape ,
The rain and wind did lash him ,
His collar hid his make ,
I caught a glance to notice ,
that no one chose to see ,
That ghost was tin can Georgie ,
the one named Georgie B ..
Once he filled a stadium ,
All singing out his name , Georgie , Georgie , they call you the Belfast Boy ...
There also making the same state of the art facilities at William Fosters Playing Fields in Ince
Which will include two new floodlit 3G Football Turf Pitches (FTPs), a four-team changing pavilion with two officials' changing rooms, cafe and social space, plus two training rooms, car parking and children's play area. The site will serve a number of football clubs in the area, including Hindley Juniors FC, who will use the site to accommodate their existing 39 teams.
You'll hear cries of "To feet" on this surface. A bit difficult on the old pitches when you had to content with dandelion clumps, broken glass, pit waste and dog waste.
I sincerely hope that The Wigan Pub Historian will forgive me for gatecrashing his excellent photo of a patch of astroturf , but I have a very important APB , fao Barrie Old .
Barrie , do you still tune your cat’s whisker into this frequency ?
Give one knock for yes , or two knocks for no .
Or three if you can’t go .
Hey Ozy yesterday I had to go to Leigh infirmary for some new hearing aids, the new ones they gave are the rechargeable type.
I then went into Leigh and saw a big tray hotpot in a butty shop window so I went in and ended up buying a frozen one, when I got home I cut it into six and then put them into my freezer to be consumed at a later date
Coming back through Wigan I nipped into the Brick and asked Simon if he had any bike mirrors and to my surprise he said look into that box which I did and found a pair just like yours.
I asked how much do I own you and he said take them and try them and if I'm happy about the fit just make a donation.
Told you mick , he’s a decent bloke Simon .
You may need to bend the mirror arms in the vice a bit though in order to get the correct adjustment .
Yes he is, the Brick bike shop must be the very best place in Wigan to buy a second hand bike from or get some repairs done, and in supporting them you are helping to poor people of Wigan.
Ozy, I'm intrigued, so knock 1. Like Janice, I don't like the the tone being spouted on WW Comms by certain posters hence I have not subscribed to that section. I neither do Facebook nor Twitter for the same reason by some posters on those social? sites. PS, watch out for a new photo shortly on album.
Check this out Barrie , although you may have seen it previously …
I thought it was brilliant .

Ozy .
Incidentally Mick , be aware of them rechargeable hearing aids .
There was one bloke on the news last week managed to set his house on fire recharging his rechargeable bike battery … So take ‘em out before you plug ‘em in , there’s a good lad .
Ozy, Thanks for that link, one video I hadn't seen before. If you access https://www.scottishroadsarchive.org/ you may find that interesting , I have given some input over the past with photos and history of the early Glasgow west M8 and the Erskine Bridge approach roads.
