Bronze Statue
As I was taking this snap , an elderly couple going past said they call it ' The Colossus of Ince ' !
Michaelangelo's David it ain't !
Good Photo Tom - I have to say it looks out of place though near the main road. It’s a bit garish to say the least….
did they need planning permission for that
We saw this statue recently when passing through Ince. I was born in Ince in 1952 and grew up there through the 1950s and 1960s, and even in the "permissive" sixties I think this would have caused quite a furore in Ince! It would have been something to be seen inside a museum in Manchester, not out on the street. I can just imagine our neighbours saying to my Mam, "Ee, Tizzie, 'ave yer seen yon mon o'er t'bridge?!" How times have changed!
Beautiful statue but would be better-placed than in front of a garage forecourt.
Not me, nor was yesterday’s comment.
This used to be outside Titan Flooring in Landgate.
Has a passing resemblance to a younger Frankie Howerd.
I put a comment on at 8.30 this morning. Disappointed that it hasn't been added.
My apologies...my comment HAS gone on. I thought it had been omitted. Sorry, Admin. My mistake.
Looks like summat out of ‘Goldfinger’……
Imagine what the ‘old timers’ would have said who used to work there over the years.
I bet the lads who used to work there have had a good laugh, what’s wrong with a loose boiler suit or a pair of jeans, can you imagine closing your eyes when the hammer came down.(Talk about tears)
Gary titter ye not neigh, naughty.
Reminds me of my late husband, he used to be a bodybuilder and he had curly hair like the statue because he was an half caste, part Welsh and part Jamaican.
Is he named after a Greek God? If so , which one please.
Ponos was the Greek God of hard labour and toil , so being near Bulldog Tools ...
The only Greek God who was known to be ugly was Zeus’s son Hephaestus, so if you think this is ugly , he’s your chap or God .
I just hope we don’t get a cold snap that could do some damage to his extremities. There’s nothing worse than frost bite on the fingers and toes.
I've read somewhere? it was made to promote the film GLADIATOR.
Dave, I was named after a Greek Goddess! Irene, (pronounced Ireenee) was the Greek Goddess of Peace. My teachers at Hindley Grammar School always called me Ireenee, but you only ever got it pronounced "Ireen" in Ince!
Yes Irene , Goddess Eirene, who as you say was the Goddess of Peace . She was also the Goddess of Spring .
She was the daughter of Zeus and had two sisters , Eunomia who was the Goddess of Good Order , and Dike who was the Goddess of Justice . I don’t know what your star sign is Irene , but it would work perfectly for someone who was Libra , as this would bring great harmony . The other Greek Goddess for Peace and Justice , believe it not , was Goddess Harmonia .Enjoy the sunshine if it is shining your end .
He’ll catch his death going about like that in Wigan’s climate!
What he needs is a flat cap to cover his “ personality “.
