Wallgate
Don't do it Dennis ! I know the world's gone mad but we can talk this over .
Interesting photo Dennis.
Missing - double decker buses and the horse, bridle reins shop on the right, just beyond the station entrance!
not a good place to be dennis
What a lovely place this is when you come out of the stations…can’t imagine what visitors think
As long as Dennis doesn't walk across the bars Poet! They don't look safe ... ! ;~((
Don’t worry Poet, I’m not going unless I can take my Piggy Bank with me!
I presume you were on a train Dennis.
No Pw, I was on the platform.
I remember looking up at a steam train going over the bridge when I was sat in my tansad outside of the wallgate pie shop
Nice one Dennis, I remember the shop Gary mentioned I think it was Robinsons saddlery before it became Derby wines, I'm led to believe the off licence there now have a doorman on duty, and also the Masonic hall on left with scaffolding in place does anyone know what will become of this building.
Was it Robinson saddlery to the right of the photo?
I remember going in there just for the unique aroma of the leather goods.
Great photo of old Wigan, many happy memories of walking from the pier, up Wallgate and under the bridge with the rumbling of trains going over the top. :-))
Dave Lewis and Britboy - it was Robinson's. Could not remember this morning. There was a magazine called Horse & Hound the shop was advertised within.
It certainly was Robinson's, started in 1867 by James Robinson, owned in the 1960's and run by his grandson of the same name. Later bought by a Standish lad who Poet will know, namely Jim Bentham of Bentham's farm. He moved the store to Ashton in Makerfield, the company is now owned by Sports Direct, unfortunately they have since closed the store after more than 150 years of business.
Dave Lewis parts of the masonic hall being made into flats
Yes I remember Jim . The stables were very close to your house Roy .
Correct Dave.
Would have got a great view of the Queen from here.
Correct Dave.
This was my first sight of Wigan on a Friday night in August 1967 arriving at 12.05am - the street was buzzing with people even at that time of night. Lovely memories of a great town, which became my home for 36 years.
You came at the best time Pat, then left before things took a real turn for the worse.
But Wigan does get under the skin as you know full well.
Yes indeed Veronica. Having come from a small village, I was greatly impressed. I remember going to the Casino and my husband's aunt was taking the coats as we went in, and later when we ordered chicken in the basket, his uncle brought the food to the table. I thought they must own the place - what a country bumpkin!
We might have been in the building at the same time Pat. We used to go there and wasn't it the height of sophistication eating chicken in a basket...;~)
Happy days and good times...
Good times indeed Veronica.
