Whatever they pull out of there will be worthless. Why bother?

They're not fishing for Your bike are they Mick. or maybe they will catch a steelhead.

These pullers are all professional and belong to a group of Magnet Pullers, well that's what they told me, they have traveled from different areas of Britain for this meet up on the canal bank in Ince.

You can actually see a video here of them at work, by copying and pasting this link. https://youtu.be/Qpdnc1O0YZw

Everybody to their own, they must enjoy doing it and they are cleaning up the canal and get a bit of scrap.Lots of videos on YouTube.

What happens if they latch onto a supermarket trolley.....??? I doubt they would want to take that home... what a boring pastime... not as thrilling as trudging over fields with one of those 'beeping' machines to discover long lost treasure.
( which usually has to be turned in, although they would get some reward.)

You come across all sorts of people on your travels Mick!!

What do they do with all the junk they pull out? Do they chuck it back in, or do they take it with them when they go?

Comment by: Mick on 14th October 2021 at 11:28

The people I see all the time on the canal bank pulling their magnets just leave the catch on the side of the towpath, but this lot told me they are a responsible professional group who phone the local scrap men to tell them that they will be in the area on certain days

The junk is left on the towpath. I see piles of scrap whenever I walk the towpaths.

Maybe it was this group of magnet fishers that pulled out a live grenade from the canal at Astley in February this year, and a couple of weeks earlier in January a lad found another live grenade in the River Douglas in Shevington, according to this report. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/police-carry-out-controlled-explosion-19792454

I never know this kind of thing went on Mick.
Reminds me of kebbing for coal next the Crooke tippler.

Comment by: peebee on 14th October 2021 at 19:15

Well if Bill pulled out a grenade, and his mate Ben next to him pulled out a pin it would be a right kerfuffle on the canal bank.

Comment by: Bruce Almighty on 14th October 2021 at 19:24

Mick, if they are "professional",who pays them?
No scrapman I know of would give them anything for badly oxidized ferrous metal, which is all they'll get with a magnet, from a canal.
