Wigan Hall
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-WX200)
What a beautiful building, Wigan really has some great historic history, Thanks Dennis for another great photo.
It is certain a wonderful building, must look up its history.
PS for Veronica.....have found John St....off Hardy Butts ?
Absolutely beautiful building, and it's not the only historic one for Wiganer's to cherish. If only that could be done to all of them that's left.
A building of beauty, style and character.
Yes That's right Helen Hardybutts was at the bottom of John St. Part of Hardybutts still exists albeit cut off in the middle. Did you find the VE Day celebrations? That scene was in the grounds of a school canteen towards the bottom end of John St.
Wigan Parish Church,s Rectory. There was a big lawn to the left of that building where we used to dance around the May Pole with the Bluecoat Infants school in the mid 1940,s
Now that what I would call a nice set chimneys.
They certainly knew how to build in those days, I do not like modern buildings, and there must must have been an awful lot of thought behind buildings like this and others in the same vein, whereas I can't see an awful lot of imagination in today's so called modern buildings and let's face it they do nothing for the eye..there's no beauty in them at all..but that's just my opinion...but I'm sticking to it.
I agree, Maureen. The new building down Library Street, (Wigan Life Centre or whatever it's called), looks like it's built out of Lego. It has all the character of a bin-bag.
Helen of Troy have a look here for some history on the hall.

Wasn't there some photos of the interior in the Album on here, I can't find them if there are? I remember it wasn't as ornate as I would have expected it to have been.
Couldn't agree more Maureen and Irene.
Irene,by the time they've paid for all that glass being cleaned on the ( modern ) buildings week in and week out they could have paid for a good architect to create a beautiful building I'm sure...or am I totally wrong.
If we think Wigan is bad go to Milton Keynes the concrete jungle
You are all right,Irene,Maureen and Elizabeth. Were on earth have they got the architect's from.Wigan Market built in the 1980s due to be demolished.Just over 30 years old.Now not fit for purpose Its a disgrace.

I wish someone could tell me why my comments double up.
Maureen, I go on facebook a lot and a gentleman regularly adds a lot of photos of Wigan, Ince and Hindley and they always come up three times! I'm sure he doesn't mean that to happen. It is probably something quite simple but needs a younger or more technical brain that ours to fathom out. I have been puzzled many times by such things and my twelve-year-old grandson has seen immediately what the problem is!
