Makinson Arcade
I love this entrance to the arcade, almost as much as the other end.--When was the arcade built? The lettering in glass suggests art nouveau to me, but maybe I am wrong, as my computer tells me I am even spelling it wrongly. However,I can't think of another spelling of nouveau!
I love this as well Ellen, an iconic bit of Wigan...long may it remain.A good photo Jane.
Hi Helen
Well that is how I would spell it too ! Maybe it should be capital A and N ...or just maybe your computer cannot spell !
Hope you are well x
Ellen, the glass canopy with the lettering is comparatively modern,it was added in the 1990's if I remember rightly. The arched window however, dates back to the building of the arcade.
Sorry Ellen/Helen
Should've said Ellen !
I must have been away with the fairies ! :-)
Standishgate 1910 showing the Arcade as it was then.
Nice shot. Jane.

For all it's faults Wigan has some beautiful architecture
When I come over and visit Wigan, this is one of the places I have to walk through, the other end has had some great pics taken to.
No worries,Tricia!...My own sister always called me Helen, -and named one of her daughters for me;-but her name is Helen!
Just a thought ,where is the boundary between Market Place and Standishgate. I always considered the Arcade to be off Market Plase
