Grand Arcade
The entrance to the dark and dismal dungeon.
This is the first time I have seen a picture of the Grand Arcade! My first thought was 'from the sublime (yesterday's picture) to the ridiculous'(todays). No reflection on the pictures which are good, but on the buildings!
"Grand Arcade" is this truly a grand arcade? Nice photo nice and clear.
Now this is Woolies corner.
Plenty chewing gum on the paving, or is it leaves...I'll go with gum. Nice shot Jane.
There's nothing grand about it , rubbish shops , all closing down 1 by 1 ' monsoon gone bhs gone who's next I wonder , never mind we can always have another over priced coffee shop!!!
I like the grand Arcade. it's always warm and clean with a variety of shops. you can have coffee and there are places to sit and rest.A big improvement on the scruffy old Station Road in my opinion
I'll check when I go today if it's 'chewy' or not Garry!
We are getting quite a series of shopping pictures- I ask myself is Jane employed by Wigan Council ? :-))
I don't know why people go shopping here on a day out, there isn't hardly any shops here I was born in wigan and I live elsewere now, it is a horrible place to visit as I have been back a few times in the past. no thankyou anymore to come back here.
The armchair Incer strikes again LOL, Must be gum if Larry says so, no sexist or racist comments this time ?
Bland Arcade is the more accurate title for this abomination on our once nice town centre. I doubt the shoppers here are that fussed, so long as they're consuming more goods and buying things they don't need, at the same time building up their credit card debts. As long as they're buying the latest Assasins Creed game, £50 shirt from Topman, etc then thats all that matters to them. Don't forget they are being watched every second by CCTV cameras everywhere they go.
A modern 'mess' squeezed between a mock Tudor building and the 100+ years old Ship Hotel facade, which thankfully was preserved. Nice clear pic Jane, as are your others on P-a-D.
Jane, Very good set of photos
Spot on Ab people all today is like you said lets by what everyone has got tops at £50 etc like you said Ab that,s all matters to them today they are all taken in people today what a sad and horrible world it is today.
The only decent shop in the place was the discount bookshop - ironically it was the first shop to close.
And don't forget Ugg boots at 150+ quid a pair Ab. Ridiculous! I could get four new tyres for my Reliant Robin for that kind of money, plus enough petrol to get me to Paris and back. Plus a pint of pastis while I was there. And by the way, are the comments by Juluie really by Julie?, or is there someone on here actually called Juluie?
It was much better years ago, with a shop on every corner, the problem is,there are too many folk these days, and the supermarkets and shopping centres are a necessity.
Oh dear Ozy, get a grip!,
I know this will upset people but that's life :
WIGAN in GENERAL is a DUMP! ALL what was needed was to do a complete re-vamp of the MARKETGATE there were plenty on both levels for all those stores in the grand arcade to be accomodated there. Also this would have saved the council and us ratepayers paying for the white elephant as for the "old station rd" that could too have been made into a lovely park in the town centre !
Agreed Ozy, and Well it is a bit sad if you can't spell your own name.
Woolies corner. That's a laugh. Years ago you literally had to elbow your way into the crowd to cross the street.
Superb! Modern Wigan doesn't disappoint.
Does Lynne work for Wigan Council or the company who built the Grand Arcade ???? I have never heard anyone say that they like shopping in Wigan !
Idont know why they call it the grand arcade thers nothing grand about it.
I am in this picture. And i dont remember givng Jane permission to plaster it all over wigan world? wheres my privicy gone?
Carl D, sorry to tell you this mate but all our Privicy went when camera's were put up everywhere.i don't live in Bolton ( thank God) but all the Cameras round our way go to a building near Bolton Tip.
