The entrance to the dark and dismal dungeon.

Comment by: Ellen on 24th January 2017 at 01:51

This is the first time I have seen a picture of the Grand Arcade! My first thought was 'from the sublime (yesterday's picture) to the ridiculous'(todays). No reflection on the pictures which are good, but on the buildings!

Comment by: Ken R on 24th January 2017 at 02:29

"Grand Arcade" is this truly a grand arcade? Nice photo nice and clear.

Comment by: Derek Platt on 24th January 2017 at 04:05

Now this is Woolies corner.

Comment by: Garry on 24th January 2017 at 04:22

Plenty chewing gum on the paving, or is it leaves...I'll go with gum. Nice shot Jane.

Comment by: Daisy on 24th January 2017 at 08:38

There's nothing grand about it , rubbish shops , all closing down 1 by 1 ' monsoon gone bhs gone who's next I wonder , never mind we can always have another over priced coffee shop!!!

Comment by: kath on 24th January 2017 at 08:48

I like the grand Arcade. it's always warm and clean with a variety of shops. you can have coffee and there are places to sit and rest.A big improvement on the scruffy old Station Road in my opinion

Comment by: Vb on 24th January 2017 at 08:59

I'll check when I go today if it's 'chewy' or not Garry!
We are getting quite a series of shopping pictures- I ask myself is Jane employed by Wigan Council ? :-))

Comment by: Juluie on 24th January 2017 at 09:04

I don't know why people go shopping here on a day out, there isn't hardly any shops here I was born in wigan and I live elsewere now, it is a horrible place to visit as I have been back a few times in the past. no thankyou anymore to come back here.

The armchair Incer strikes again LOL, Must be gum if Larry says so, no sexist or racist comments this time ?

Comment by: Ab on 24th January 2017 at 09:52

Bland Arcade is the more accurate title for this abomination on our once nice town centre. I doubt the shoppers here are that fussed, so long as they're consuming more goods and buying things they don't need, at the same time building up their credit card debts. As long as they're buying the latest Assasins Creed game, £50 shirt from Topman, etc then thats all that matters to them. Don't forget they are being watched every second by CCTV cameras everywhere they go.

Comment by: Roy on 24th January 2017 at 10:06

A modern 'mess' squeezed between a mock Tudor building and the 100+ years old Ship Hotel facade, which thankfully was preserved. Nice clear pic Jane, as are your others on P-a-D.

Jane, Very good set of photos

Comment by: Juluie on 24th January 2017 at 12:10

Spot on Ab people all today is like you said lets by what everyone has got tops at £50 etc like you said Ab that,s all matters to them today they are all taken in people today what a sad and horrible world it is today.

Comment by: A.W. on 24th January 2017 at 12:31

The only decent shop in the place was the discount bookshop - ironically it was the first shop to close.

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 24th January 2017 at 15:19

And don't forget Ugg boots at 150+ quid a pair Ab. Ridiculous! I could get four new tyres for my Reliant Robin for that kind of money, plus enough petrol to get me to Paris and back. Plus a pint of pastis while I was there. And by the way, are the comments by Juluie really by Julie?, or is there someone on here actually called Juluie?

Comment by: Maurice on 24th January 2017 at 16:01

It was much better years ago, with a shop on every corner, the problem is,there are too many folk these days, and the supermarkets and shopping centres are a necessity.

Comment by: Julie on 24th January 2017 at 18:44

Oh dear Ozy, get a grip!,

Comment by: alan on 24th January 2017 at 18:54

I know this will upset people but that's life :
WIGAN in GENERAL is a DUMP! ALL what was needed was to do a complete re-vamp of the MARKETGATE there were plenty on both levels for all those stores in the grand arcade to be accomodated there. Also this would have saved the council and us ratepayers paying for the white elephant as for the "old station rd" that could too have been made into a lovely park in the town centre !

Comment by: Bev H on 24th January 2017 at 19:20

Agreed Ozy, and Well it is a bit sad if you can't spell your own name.

Comment by: Ken R on 25th January 2017 at 01:08

Woolies corner. That's a laugh. Years ago you literally had to elbow your way into the crowd to cross the street.

Comment by: Lynne on 25th January 2017 at 02:05

Superb! Modern Wigan doesn't disappoint.

Comment by: Mary S on 25th January 2017 at 08:53

Does Lynne work for Wigan Council or the company who built the Grand Arcade ???? I have never heard anyone say that they like shopping in Wigan !

Comment by: Juluie on 25th January 2017 at 13:14

Idont know why they call it the grand arcade thers nothing grand about it.
