Top of town
I hate the "top of town" phrase. Is it considered trendy? This area has a proper name, why not use it?
I like the picture though.
The Halifax used to be Boots in the sixties - and no cobbles.
Good photo.
There are some beautiful buildings in Wigan if you look up at them....we tend to keep our eyes at shop-door level!
Good photo showing three different type of buildings, left a modern-ish type, on the right mock Tudor probably from early 1900s but central is the typical Wigan that we all know and love from the early 1800s I would have thought, any accurate dates anyone ??.
I remember a plumbers merchant shop at the side of where Boots would have been,it's a very clear photo Jane, saying it's off a phone.
Maurice, the shop was Bolton's.
Anne, at one time it was known as Woolies corner.
That's it Cyril,I think they moved to the Robin Park centre.
Cyril....I do remember arranging to meet friends outside Woolies but didn't ever call it Woolies corner. I also remember meeting friends at Batty's corner.
I realise this has no relevance to today's photo, but does anyone recall there being a pet shop in Greenough St.? The reason I ask is because I remember coming to Wigan to buy a budgie, and ending up in that area. God knows how. It would have been around 1968 or thereabouts, and they were in the process of demolishing many of the terraced properties in Scholes. On passing the partially demolished Zulu St. I pointed out the street sign to my brother, to which he replied, " Aye, it favvers t' Zulus av bin an' all '. Strange, the things that get lodged in one's memory bank isn't it ?
There is a lovely picture of Zulu St on street scenes item 908. It's VE day and the residents are having a party. Have a look Ozy I think you will change your minds about Zulus warriors .
