I agree with the sign Dave is a legend and he as put Wigan on the world map.
Who or what is Dave Whalen ? I left Wigan more than 40 years ago. The name means nothing to me. No disrespect intended.
Great photo.
Spot on the gent with the sign.
I don't know what all the fuss is about!
A storm in a green tea cup!
Great photo!
Which one of the young lads was going for Dave's Chinese take-away?
Alan,
40years ago (1974) Dave Whelan had a supermarket in Hope Street/Mesnes Street, opposite the old bus station - ring any bells ?
Marcus,it was there in 1970.
Marcus - I remember him having a supermarket there in the 60's.
He stocked a lot of oriental and kosher food!
A legend who has done more than anyone for his beloved hometown.
How anyone can suggest that D W . is rasist is an idiot, he has employed, and given more foreigners oppotunities within the football league than anyone.
Depending how old you are Alan, further to Marcus'comments, DW played for Blacburn Rovers, he broke his leg in the FA cup final at Wembley in 1960 playing against Wolves. From that he bought a corner shop in Blackburn and prceeded to grow from strength to strength, he is worth an estimated £250,000,000 now, and is the chairman/owner of Wigan Athletic.
I;m not a football fan these days but all I say is keep smiling Dave and stuff the stupid P C brigade.
Thanks for educating me, folks. It is slowly coming back to my aging brain ! He is obviously a very successful man. Something else, I think a girl from my class in Upholland Grammar School married a Dave Whelan, I wonder if he is the one. I can't even remember her name, I last saw her in 1955.
Was it Whelan and Taylor stall outside of owd market 1967ish?
Alan, DW married Patricia Barton, not sure if you are on the same DW,he is now 78 so Pat is in her late 70s.
A man I once worked for at his Warehouse. He was a very arrogant, and ignorant boss to his employees, but what he said can't honestly be construed as racist. A storm in a teacup indeed.
