Anyone know how, when & why inserting coins into wood began ? Walking in Dove Dale we noticed many fallen trees with masses of coined wedged into the bark, some must have been donkeys years old.
Unusual photo Mick, shows that some of us walk around with our eyes open !

Helen I heard that inserting copper coins into trees was to stop them from growing again.

Your right about seeing many fallen trees with coins knocked in them, Ive seen plenty up in the Lake district when Ive been walking around.

Very interesting! I must try that with a stump in my backyard. It would make a handy gardening seat!(note to ecologically minded, the tree was downed last year only because it had become diseased and was additionally interfering with Hydro wiring.)
