Nice to see it in its new position, but why are the supports welded directly onto the journal, it would have looked much better with regular bearing blocks and housings.

I heard if Latics get promoted to the premier league its going to be painted blue and white.

Most of the youth of today would not know what this wheel was used for. Is there any information boards near by telling people what its use was? I know what its use was being an ex-pitman.

Wrong position for me , it's like a case of put it there out of sight and get shut of it later.

Comment by: joe graney on 6th April 2014 at 10:12

peterp good point a bit of a plaque with its origin and purpose would be good.

Nephro...this picture was not put in here 21st of Feb...both pictures are unique in their own right, taken from completely different positions, the only commonality is the subject matter as can be said of a lot of similar photos taken Wigan.
It is impossible to compare any photographs and say they are "the same".

This headgear pulley came from Bickershaw Colliery, and it's not a wheel.

Comment by: Mick on 6th April 2014 at 14:02

Correction, they are talking about illuminating it Blue and White, not painted as previously posted.

Comment by: dirty harry on 6th April 2014 at 15:31

it's off a steam train that wheel ive got a picture of it going over frog lane bridge .

Comment by: Andy on 6th April 2014 at 16:43

I don't understand why they would light it up in blue and white or as a previous post thought paint it. Latics have been in the premier before and were in it for years. If they're becoming one of them teams that are constantly in and out of the premier league we'll end up having to do it every year.
Black when they go down, and blue and white again when they come back.

Comment by: peterp on 6th April 2014 at 18:56

Pulley restaurant does not sound right. Is the wheel off the top of the headgear or was it a deflector pulley?

Comment by: Roy on 6th April 2014 at 19:15

I would hope that this position is only temporary and it goes back to it's original and more prominant position when the building work has been completed.

Comment by: Arthur on 6th April 2014 at 19:25

How are they ever going to maintain/replace the window behind. No room for a scaffold.

Comment by: Evelyn on 6th April 2014 at 19:45

I agree with alan lad , it isn't in a prominent place now.I said as much when they first took it down to do the new build. Who made the decision to move it, was it WMBC or the college.? They will be saying next that there isn't money to take care of it, it will becomes an eyesore, it will be taken down forever.
Wake up Wigan, where is your pride.

I wish you'd go over Frog Lsne bridge, dirty harry...Jump!

Comment by: Tony Haslam on 7th April 2014 at 16:31

Yes the pulley is off the winding headgear at the then Bickershaw colliery which closed in 1990. Anybody who takes any notice of filthy Harry who has the brains of a rocking horse must be as stupid as him. He only does it to wind us up.
