Thanks for this, Alex. All too easy to overexpose birds with white feathers, but here you have nailed it.

Fascinating how we get these things flying all the way down from Iceland, too.

I agree with dirty harry,it could be anywhere but what has become a trend on photo of the day is not the unusual places or photos of wigan but the quality of shot and how doctored or touched up they can make the photograph with moody skies or glittering silver waters flowing iam not saying there is owt wrong with the photographs but its looking like a who takes the best pictures ie doctored
